Restaurant recommendations
Tickets, car and hotels all booked!
Restaurants recommendations within the cultural triangle, tangalle and galle would be appreciated.
Also is there a good shopping complex in Colombo for branded stuff? We have couple of extra hours before our flight on our way out.

shwets - are you doing a set tour? or hiring your own driver? have you used an agent or DIY?
if you are staying in the standard hotels in the Cultural triangle, most of them have their own very good restaurants; it's really only in Galle and Colombo that you'll need restaurant recommendations. in Colombo we ate in our hotel [the Galle Face, ok but not brilliant] one night, and the other at the nearby Cinnamon Grand, which was excellent.
in Galle we really liked the dinner we had at Deco on 44 and the Fort Printers, where we stayed but did not eat, got very good reviews from those who did. there are some lovely shops in Galle for clothes, art work, crafts etc. leave room in your suitcases!
our driver took us to a shopping mall in Colombo but I've no idea where it is. we didn't find anything we really liked. However, there were some excellent and well-priced clothing etc shops airside at Colombo airport though the food and drink were very over-priced so don't reckon on having a cup of coffee there unless you have money to burn.
Have a great trip - it's hard not to in Sri Lanka.

Hello,
No set tour but wee have firmed up our itinerary. We have booked a car and drive through a travel agent that was recommended by some acquaintance who lives in Colombo.
We are staying at Vil ulyana in Sigriya which seems to have a good restaurant, but I guess we would have all 3 dinners there. I was looking for something for lunch when we are seeing stuff. Yala, tangalle and galle are pretty much sorted. In galle, aman galle, fort printers, galle fort hotel (where we are staying) and crepelogy are places we hope to go to eat.
Will check out shops in galle.
I always have money to burn for a cup of coffee but will remember not to eat at the airport.

We ate at the rest house in Dambulla, which was very good. If you like your food spicy, you'll need to ask. We noted we were the only visitors who ordered Sri Lankan food. I asked if it was spicy and the waiter assured me "not spicy." I clarified that we wanted our food spicy. The waiters conferred together, asked again, and finally ordered our food. When it came, the whole wait staff congregated at the front desk and watched us. Our waiter came over and asked if the food was too spicy. I said, no, very good. When we left our driver told us that the staff had throughout it very strange that we wanted our food spicy.
Have a wonderful time in Sri Lanka!

hi schwets, your driver will probably be able to recommend places for lunch while you are out and about, and of course will take you out in the evenings if that's what you want to do. We found that the food at the hotel in Dambulla where we stayed was so good we didn't really want to go anywhere else, but had we stayed another night [we were there for 3] we might have wanted a change.
