Hello,
I am looking for restaurant advice in Hong Kong for my husband and I. Cicerone, I have found a babysitter...this is Joanne with the 3 young children and the husband who is working all day. Cicerone mentioned Tuscany by H. Can you tell me where it is? And if not Tuscany, I am wondering if you could advise me on any of your other favorites. I am looking for a restaurant...not one of the MegaStar restaurants like Felix, Aqua or Hutong. Perhaps somewhere up the escalators that is a little more intimate in feeling. We went to M on the Fringe last year, which we thought was very nice for example.
On another note, we will be going to the JW Marriott in Phuket for a week at the end of January and I am looking for restaurant reccos outside of the hotel. Last year we went to the close-by beach town with the beachside restaurants which was fun. Is it worth taking a taxi to the Banyan Tree or Trisara for dinner?
Does anyone have any favorite restaurants in Patong?
Cicerone, I know from your posts that you have been to the JW Marriott, did you find any restaurants that you enjoyed?
Thank you Joanne

The address of Tuscany by H is below. I think it is a good choice for excellent food and a nice ambience. It is in Lan Kwai Fong:
Tuscany by H
58-62 D’Aguilar Street
(Lan Kwai Fong bar area)

Fax: 2521-8116

I would also have recommended M at the Fringe, so I will leave that off the list, but below are some other places I live in the Lan Kwai Fong/Soho area and also in the Star Street area, which is in Wan Chai and is the new trendy restaurant area which is where Ingredients is located, which is one of my very favorite restaurants in town. None of these are going to have any views to speak of, but the food should make up for it (But see Pearl on the Peak and Man Wah Restaurant below for some reccos with views.) Also, you can walk along Wyndham Street just past where M at the Fringe is in the Dairy Building there and you will find just dozens of restaurants now in place of the carpet shops that used to be there (Frog Face Fish for one, good, not really "romantic" IMO) and see what interests you.
La Terrasse
Ground Floor
19 Old Bailey Street

Very good French food in a bistro type pleasant setting, they have a small terrace at back. In the Hollywood Road area of antique shops, near to Soho. Nice wine list of mainly French wines. Good value set meals for lunch and dinner. Excellent duck confit.

Thai fusion food, interesting and good. (Think sun dried tomatoes with lemon grass.) Tiny romantic restaurant. Not sure how authentically Thai the food is, but still good.

Italian but with a nice twist. The ground floor is a lounge, main dining room is upstairs. Innovative items vie on the menu - artichoke ravioli with mint oil, prawns and dried mullet roe. Nice wine list.
Entoeca
47 Elgin Street
Tel 2525-9944
Spanish, great tapas, has a courtyard in back and some table in front with outdoor feeling.
Le Fauchon
6 Staunton Street
Tel 2526-2136
Very good French restaurant. Appetizers average around HK$180 and dinners around HK$220. They have a prix fixe dinner at HK$328 that would be a good value.
Brasserie Le Fauchon
45 Elgin Street
Tel: 2526-8318
French brasserie, more down scale and considerably cheaper version of their sister restaurant in Staunton street; I actually prefer it to Le Fauchon as it is newer and has a more open view. Nice menu selection (rack of lamb, duck, snails the usual French fare) with good presentation. They have a price fix dinner of 3 courses for HK$178 (US$22) or 4 courses for HK$198 (US$25) that is a very good value.

Upscale Indian (almost fusion). But very good. Nice decor and ambience. This is about to close, or may be closed by the time you get here as the chef is going to do another restaurant, but if they are still open, is worth a try if you like Indian.

Up-scale Indian in Central. Good food and sleek atmosphere.
In the Star Street area try:
Ingredients
23 Wing Fung Street
Wan Chai
Tel 2544-5133
Mostly European dishes, definitely one of my top ten favourite restaurants in Hong Kong. Their new location (they used to be in Soho) is really modern and sleek, they have a nice bar downstairs and a high-ceilinged dining room upstairs done in dark muted tones, try for a window table, not much of a view but still nice. I would call this a romantic restaurant, lighting is quite dark and it’s fairly quiet.
Chez Patrick
8-9 Sun Street
Wan Chai (Star Street area)

Very good French food in a very elegant setting, black and white decor with touches of red. Patrick is from Lyon, and much of his cooking is from this region, and it is all just very good food. Good wine list. This is the Star Street area branch, he has a restaurant in Peel Street as well, check the website for the address. While the food is equally good at both, I like this restaurant a bit better for its ambience mostly, it's on a quite pedestrian-only courtyard lane and you can have a drink outside before or after dinner or go to one of the bars in the neighborhood for a drink. Sun Street can be a little hard to find, its a tiny street off of Star Street in the few remaining low-rise group of buildings here. You can access it via a stairway from Queens Road East, look for a 7-11 on your right walking from Pacific Place/MTR, then take your next right into an open tree lined plaza and look for a set of stairs at the back, go up to the top, turn right, the restaurant is right in front of you on the corner.

Despite what I think is a very unfortunate name, this is a good restaurant, serving French/continental fare, Tiny, there are maybe 8 tables in the place, but it is on a corner and walls are all glass or open to the street so you get a larger feeling You are almost sitting IN the kitchen, but it smells good. Nice ambience. This restaurant is located on the same tiny pedestrian-only street as Chez Patrick (see above).

Continental fare and some tapas at the bar. Nice modern decor, open bar to the street, very nice for a drink before or after dinner at one of the other restaurants in the neighborhood, very nice for lunch too. Be sure to see the tiny temple at the end of the street here.
Cincecitta
9 Star Street

Italian. This gets VERY uneven reviews, and I have had both good and OK meals there. This was the first restaurant in the Star Street area and now that there are so many other good ones (e.g. Ingredients and Chez Patrick) I don't know if it is worth it or if it will survive. Nice ambience and you can sit outside and have a drink where they have a nice green area.
One restaurant that does have The View but not all the hype of Felix, etc would be Pearl on the Peak, which is up on the Peak and has very good food, primarily seafood. It is a branch of the restaurant in Melbourne. Excellent view, try of course for a window seat but most any view in the house is OK, as the place is small. Great deserts.

This was just refurbished along with the rest of the hotel, and I think this is the most beautiful Chinese restaurant I have ever been in. Not glitzy with chandeliers and lots of gold, just nice clean-lined wood furniture and soft colors. Shanghai cuisine. On the top floor of the Mandarin. It is small and elegant. The tables along the eastern wall (Chater Garden side) would have the best view, so try to book those. Very quiet and romantic, not for a noisy party, but good for a small celebration or quiet dinner. Very good food and service of course. Have a drink at the M Bar next door before or afterwards for the view as well.
For Phuket, I like all the restaurants AT the JW Marriott, the restaurants at the Aman and the Chedi hotels are very good (amanhotels.com and phuket.com/chedi), and of course the Baan Rim Pa is very well known and IMO you should defiantly have a meal there (try for a window or terrace table, they have a nice view from their hilltop location, go to http://www.baanrimpa.com). The restaurant at Mom Tri's Boat House Hotel (boathousephuket.com) is popular too. I think the waterclub (or similar name if that is not it exactly) at the Banyan Tree is very good too, no views and it is not on the beach, but is in a pleasant setting surrounded by water.
We stayed at the JW in Phuket and went to dinner one evening to Trisara. Its about a 10-15 min taxi from the JW. The property is beautiful and the outdoor dining area, overlooking the ocean, the incredible pool and the outline of the Trisara buildings is very memorable. I believe the consulting chef for the restaurant is Neil Perry, a well known Austaralian chef. When we were there he had just been there the weekend before for a 2 day series of lunches and dinners. (We missed those.) In any event, the dinner we had was just outstanding, one of the best we had in Thailand. Service was very accomodating. Have fun.
Hi, I have just returned from the Banyan Tree in Phuket and found that the Watercourt Rest had various buffets throughout the week, rather than an a la carte menu. This may have just been during the festive season though. Their other restaurant, Tamarind, is excellent, nice setting beside the pool but we found it very expensive, even for hotel pricing!
We did eat at Baa Rim Pa one night and had a fantastic meal. Our table was on the terrace overlooking the beach, the food and service were excellent, highly recommend the Mai Tai cocktails!
We also ate at Mom Tri's Kitchen at the Villa Royale. We had an excellent lunch one afternoon and then booked for dinner later in the week. It was truly excellent, great service, really nice atmosphere, and the food was fabulous, especially their lemon tart. This may be a bit of a trek from the Marriot however. It took us about 50 minutes from the BT but it was definitely worth it.
Silk is a nice restaurant with tables inside with air-con and outside on the terrace overlooking the road. Recommend chocolate mousse for dessert!
