On another site, someone mentioned there is a Vietnam consulate in Luang Prabang at the airport. Can you obtain a Vietnam visa there (we are United States residents)? We will be in Luang Prabang for 4 nights so would have time when we arrive. Thanks!

I don't remember exactly, but yep, you can get the visa there (i didn't pay much attention, so I'm not quite 100% sure).
Will you be in Vientiane?? it's might be easier.
Please note that the price for American residents is more expensive compare with others, I also not quite sure, but as I remember, it's about 25USD more expensive, it's take about 3 or 4 days to make the visa.
Honestly, you should check yourselves carefully in case you don't have much time.

I was JUST in Luang Prabang and silly me had not gotten my Vietnam visa beforehand. Luckily, though, nearly every travel agency in town (and there are LOTS) offer visa services for Vietnam. I paid $45 for the visa and two-day service (it was $60 for one-day; they also do three-day but I don't know the going rate), which is actually less than I would've paid had I gotten my visa in the US.
When I asked the agency where they take my passport to get the visa, they told me to the consulate in Vientiane. However, on my visa, it does say "Luang Prabang" as the place of issue. When I flew out of LP, I didn't see a Vietnam consulate at the tiny airport, although I wasn't looking, either.
Either way, you can definitely get a visa while in LP.

I am not sure about the airport, but last summer, my husband and I applied for our Vietnam visas in Bahrain. However, our friendly tour guide in Luang Prabang obtained them for us, stating we did not need the email approval letter I had brought with me. We paid extra to have the visas processed the same day. We were traveling by bus from LP to Saigon. We had no problems going thru customs at the border. I would doublecheck with a travel agency since a lot can change in a year.

As others have said, you can get one in LP. but they have to send your passport to Vientiane to have it done. Any of the local travel agencies can do it.
