Hi everyone
my husband and I are travelling for the first time to Japan and we're very confused about where to stay in Kyoto. I'm cheking different websites and there seems to be many areas in Kyoto. Which is the best one to stay near the main attractions? Also, how cold does it get in December?
Thanks in advance!

Bonjour Vero,
The area around the station (Shimogyo-ku) is very convenient for transportation inside and outside Kyoto. It is however a bit far from the center and the main attractions to walk to. IMO, the best area is the center (Nakagyo-ku), between Shi-jo and Oike avenue: close to the "action" (Gion, shopping arcades, the geisha district, etc.), good transportation.
Be aware that many of the main attractions (Golden pavilion, temples, etc.) are scattered all around the city, so being close to a transportation hub is a plus.
Temperatures in December are coolish - between 50 and 60F during the day, dropping to 40-50F at night. Towards the end of the month, you can have some chilly days, with perhaps frost and snow flurries. With highish humidity, it can feel really cold walking on wooden corridors without your shoes in many temples, so make sure you pack thick socks or two.
Hi, veromar -
I chose to stay near the intersection of Shijo and Kawaramachi - there are a lot of interesting restaurants and shops around there, its an easy walk to Pontocho and Gion and other interesting areas, and there are several different subway and train stations that are readily assessible there.
Hope that helps!
