I flew from Vientiane to Phonsavahn about 8 or 9 years ago. Interesting flight, lots of ups and downs, etc.

Google search shows several old links on overland travel. It seems that there are some tours available from LP to that area now.

Maybe get to Vang Vieng and from there go to Phonsavahn.

Guess it is time for me to make another trip back to Laos.

Good luck.

You might want to check on Thorntree, LP's travel forum. When I was in LP back in 2002, I met a couple who had just come back from Phonsavan (overland). They reported that the bus trip takes 8-12 hours each way depending on road conditions.

The bus trip is about 10 hours and is not thqt comfortable. Now is the wet season as well.
Bets way to get to POJ is to fly from Vientiane. Lao Airlines had some reasonable deals to Phonsavahn which included accommodation. It is only a 25 minute flight.

I went from Luang Prabang to Phonsavahn by bus and then on to Vang Vieng last July. The scenery would have been spectacular except that if it was drizzly rain for much of the trip to the Plain of Jars. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip though.

On the trip to Vang Vieng there were only two westerners on the VIP bus but that was fine. Lots of locals and a man with with an AK47! (I think that's what it was - I'm not really up with firearms.) Apparently there have been instances of bandits on the road but not for some years.

From memory it took about 8 hours to the Plain of Jars and a bit less to Vang Vieng. While the road was probably a bit rough I'm an Australian and i've seen a lot worse locally.

The man with the AK47 would have been a soldier getting a lift. There have not been armed guards on the buses for several years now.
