Beautiful pictures, you are an artist! All the subjects were outstanding and framed well. Did you use your 7D? Looks like lighting was a challenge at times?

Aloha!

Thanks HT but I think the equipment was better than the photographer and thus the pictures came out good! I used a 5D mk 2, I prefer it's full frame sensor over the 7D, and used a couple of "L" lenses for the trip. Yes lighting at sunrise was difficult especially when trying to shoot people with a bright light source behind them. Had a small fill flash and bounced the lights for a milder effect. Also, I use several custom functions like back button focusing with front shutter button for light metering only. For the night shot at Mendut temple I shot at very high ISO hand-held and the picture I uploaded was the best from my shaky hands. I am still trying to figure out what caused the "dancing" lights you see with my daughter in the background....

GREAT pics! I want the one of smoking Merapi at sunset on my wall!

I don't understand what you said about lighting, but it definitely works!

Gosh those are some of the BEST photos I have ever seen. What a wonderous place to visit. You've definitely piqued my interest. Were you at all concerned that the volcano could go off at high level while you were there? Is there a "vog" from the volcano?
Will re read your report and check into the places you stayed (and the rates)- Many thanks for sharing with us.

Thank you Sue for your compliment! At first I wanted to visit another volcano in Eastern Java - Bremo but the warning levels are(were) quite high so I decided to only concentrate on Borobudur. No "vog" but we didn't really go that close to the vent. Truthfully I would had love to witness an eruption from about 30 - 40KM away!

then join us in Kona at the Hawaii GTG this year where one has been erupting for the past 30 years or so. Carol and Ken will fill you in on the details

FYI vog only occurs when a volcano is erupting

Aloha!
