We plan on spending a few nights in Phuket in early December and would like suggestions for a nice place that's not over $200 a night.

try looking at www.huahin.20m.com and select phuket at the top drop down..
Choosing your beach is the first thing, Patong is the busiest with nightlife etc, lots of restaurants and shopping. Karon is next down quieter but with restaurants and easy distance to Patong when you want, Kata Beach is just beyond Karon, there are other beaches but you need to think if you want quiet or busy, there is a good choice even high season under USD 200, some to look at would be Kata Beach Resort, Karon Beach Resort, Meridien Resort, Kata Thani Resort, if you go straight to this list are sorted by beaches and will give you ideas,

If you can advise what sort of beach you want, whether absolute beachfront is essential, large resort or small boutique we can give lots of specific names/places.
Thanks. Those are helpful suggestions and I'll start looking in my guidebook and at the websites. We're coming with our 22-year-old son and want something not ridiculously commercial or built up but with a nice swimming beach and good restaurants. We won't be renting a car. I appreciate the help.
