Phuket.....John Gray Starlight tour out to the Hongs of Phang Nga???

Does anyone have any input on this tour? My sister is interested in doing this on our trip and I’d like to know if it’s worth my time. I’m a diver and she’s not so I completely understand she wants to nail down some interesting things to do however the day she wants to schedule it I can be on a dive instead. Thanks for any feedback you may have.

I've not done this tour. But I can tell you that the John Gray tours get consistently positive reviews from Fodorites. It is the only tour I'd recommend in Phuket.

It has been over 10 years since I did the day trip with them and still fondly remember how much fun my whole family had.

Going to Phuket today so might do it again over the weekend!

Ok great.... I don't want my sister to feel left out of the fun as she's taking a trip with three divers. Being the only land dweller among us gets old sometimes however we try to include her suggestions as often as we can.

Kathie... We shouldn’t take on any other tours she may come up with for the Phuket portion of our trip? Are they all pretty bad?

Personally, I wouldn't take any other tours in Phuket. Most of them are pretty awful, IMO. There is the "James Bond Island" tour, one to PhiPhi (you see the worst of PhiPhi with hoards of other daytrippers) and some tours will take you to ride an elephant. Avoid these. You only want to interact with elephants where they are well-cared for, humanely treated. There are places in northern Thailand I'd recommend none on Phuket.

Kathie … Ironically I was going to ask about an elephant camp in Chiang Mai. My sister has us tentatively booked at the Patara elephant farm. From what I’ve seen online and read it appears to be a great place for the elephants, where they are treated well. Any other suggestions?

Kathie... She does want to see Phi Phi as well, how would you recommend she see it if not by a tour? We will see it on one of our dives however she isn’t a part of that trip so I’d like to give her some ideas.

Well, she could hire a boat to rake her (alone or with a couple other people) there and stop at several places on the island so she gets s feel for it. The tours drop everyone at once on the busiest beach, so you don't get any sense of what staying there would be like. She would need to make sure her boat would get there well before the daytrippers.

Great idea Kathie… I will let her know! A speedboat would be best correct?
