Phuket, Thailand hotel reservations for New Years 2008. Too early?

I'm looking to book hotel rooms for a family trip from December 28, 2007 - January 4th, 2008 in Phuket. I'm particularly interested in:
Le Meridien Resort
Sheraton Grande Villas
Holiday Inn

I have attempted to check availability directly through the hotel's websites and through some third parties (e.g. sawadee.com), but there is supposedly no availability.
Am I too early in trying to book these? I want to reserve something early because it's during the busy holiday season. Do you have any recommendations about what to do?
Also any feedback on the hotels would be great. The main concern is having enough to keep my 18 year old brother in law entertained.

Thanks for your help!

If you know for sure where you want to stay, contact the hotel directly to book.

I'd say you are not too early. We've spent two New Years Eves on Phuket, at Mom Tri's Villa Royale. We tried to book a particular villa a year ahead and could not do it. It was already spoken for! So, if you know for sure where you want to stay, book it now, directly with the hotel.

I've tried that at Le Meridien online and it says it's sold out. I also called the 800 number and they said the same thing.
I tried emailing another hotel (Merlin Beach Resort) and they referred me to travel agents who were unresponsive. The Holiday Inn is also all listed as booked online.
The one's that are available seem overly expensive.
I am leaning toward going with asiarooms .com because they have good prices but they can't tell me about availability of specific options until I give my credit card which would be charged in full if the option is available.
I even tried contacting travel agents with no avail.
It seems like this shouldn't be that hard.

Have you tried to contact the Holiday Inn directly (Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts)? If you call them ask specifically about the Busakorn Wing of the Holiday Inn in Patong Beach. Very nice / completely remodeled....beautiful rooms. I have gotten space there on a very short notice during the Chinese New Year (which is also a very busy time). I have some more postings on my blog at http://site.chinafinds.com/blog/2006...atong-beach-2/

and have also some images....You can also drop me a line with questions...

I'll try calling them directly and see how that goes. I was just trying to avoid that due to international calling rates from the states. I'll let you know how it goes.

For the Meridien, which we loved, you can probaly book it on spg.com. If you're a Starwoods member, you can use points. One advantage to booking online is that you MAY be able to avoid the very expensive "mandatory" New Years Eve Gala dinner. You will be amazed at the price of this Gala per person. It is never worth even 1/3 the price.
