We have been in Phuket with our two kids in July each of the past two years and spent only one day at the beach. Most of the time, we stayed indoors or in the pool. My 11 year old daughter suggests several bathing suits, capri pants for girls and shorts for boys plus the usual tank tops and t shirts. It will be wet and probably rainy on and off so they will should count on spending lots of time at the pool- the beach may be closed or red-flagged due to high and dangerous surf- or in the hotel library. Two weeks is a long time if it is raining, so perhaps you might want to check out another location like Koh Samui.

As Dywong has said you are right in the middle of the peak rainy season ( that is why hotels offer such cheap deals at this time ). Just casual clothes suffice. Be warned that undercurrents in the sea are strong and even if it does not look rough the 'undercurrents' can be dangerous. I agree Koh Samui or the Gulf weatherwise would be a far better bet.

thanks dywong and james a for your reply, does it rain most days or in the evening? will it still be hot? i know about the undercurrants so we will give the sea a miss, is there any trips anyone can suggest that will be ok for the kids, and maybe beaches that are not to far that we can go to, so they can go into the sea. thanks!

It rains both day and nite and between storms it is hot and humid. If you want to take your kids to enjoy the beach or the sea, perhaps you can take a day trip or two to Phi Phi island or Krabi which can be more protected.

You can take them to see Phuket Fantasea show at Kamala Beach, they offer Buffet + show or just show, go for the Show only. There a so many tours and excursions you can choose when you get there and see how the weather is, the weather would be unpredictable but you can check Bangkok Post newspaper which the hotel should have everyday by about midday to see what the weather will be like. Patong Beach of course is the busiest resort area, Dino Park is mini-golf Flintstones type place at Karon/Kata. There are the various trips to Phang Nga (James Bond Island) and Phi Phi but you need to see how the weather is before booking. The Marriott should also have a kids club.
Siam Safari offer a wide range of soft adventure tours including trips suitable with the kids, so you can do some of their jungle advernture type things and the kids can get as muddy as they like!
I really would try and stick to the resort pools if you can.

If you are staying at the Marriott that is north of the airport which puts you closer to Krabi. To Ao Nang Beach krabi from the Marriott about 2hrs 30 mins, Phuket car+driver prices are higher than most other places so probably around B2,500. A/con accommodation goes from around B1,000 a night for 2 so you can proably get a 2 berommed place for the 4 of you for around B2,000(US$50) a night.

Wannas Place is convenient location, now this isn't a Marriott!! But if you are going to go to the Krabi area for a couple of days it is 'cheap and cheerful' and a a/con Bungalow is around $25 a night for 2. The beach at Ao nang isn't any good but to get boats to the other beaches and with kids it's convenient. It is Thai/Swiss owned. The bungalows are fun for the kids. If you want a Marriott level place try the Tubkaak but I am 'guessing' you want just a quick trip to see Krabi area so you can do it easily without spending a fortune. Anyway take a look
