We - a family of four with children 3 and 5 years old - are planning our great Asian adventure next winter. Cebu will be our first stop mid-January, and probably stay in this area for two or three weeks. Right now the plan is to roam Cebu and Negros and maybe visit one of the smaller islands too. But neither us have been to the Philippines before - do any of you have good ideas?
We want to try and stay away from the plushest resorts, live the life on the cheap side and make the visit a great experience for our kids and ourselves. Which of course includes some beach life, even though we are continuing on to Malaysia and Thailand.
Thanks in advance for any answer!

Since your staying in Cebu for awhile, I suggest going to Bohol. Its nice there. Its onlly an hour or two by "Supercat". Visit also Malapascua, the virgin beaches in Cebu. There you will find cheap accomodations.
I suggest you go to Bohol as well, just almost 2 hrs by ferry from Cebu. We stayed at Alonaland near Alona Beach, pretty cheap average $30-40 a night for a bungalow with two full beds aircon with fridge and kitchen. The kids will love the pool too.Only cons it is not beach front but they have a service that goes to the beach every hour. Try the dolphin watching and island hopping as well (average less than $100 for a full day adventure for the whole family food included), Balicasag and Virgin islands have magnificent beaches and ideal for little ones. My daughter (3yrs old) enjoyed it alot!
They also have firefly watching, did not try it but heard about it and you can ask the staff at the hotel where you will be staying most locals know about it. You can also try the Oasis Resort in Alona beach we had breakfast there and the food is great. Breakfast is included if you check in the hotel and it's beach front so much better than Alonaland but a bit pricey but its worth it.

There are lots of good places in Cebu, Bohol, and Iloilo. If you want to go to the smaller islands, you can go to Camotes, Bantayan or Siquijor. There are lots of friendly people there so it's easy to get around just by asking people.
