Osaka shopping

I've got two days in Osaka, not a vacation but a pause in the middle of a badly cobbled together cheap flight home from work elsewhere in Asia. I've never been to Japan and am excited to get as much as possible out of my limited time there.
Since I haven't much time to explore, I would love some recommendations on interesting neighborhoods for walking. I'm also curious about the best places to shop for Japanese-designed products, especially textiles … there are so many listings for department stores and shopping streets on this site and in other guides, any hints at a good starting point would be much appreciated.

One of my fav shopping and eating places in Osaka. If your only there for two nights then make sure to check this place out.

Check out the rest of the Japan Guide too as it is a fantastic resource for Japan travel

Aloha!

There is a fabric shop with a couple of floors and tons and tons of left over rolls of silks etc at good prices.
Subway stop is nipponbashi (not sure were your staying) you then head for exit 2 take the walkway (part of namba walk) to escalators which will be on the left and currency exchange is at bottom of them.
Take up and your in front of the giant Bic store. Walk past to the first cross street go right and walk down it. Fabric place will be on the left about half way along the alley. Barrels of odds and ends outside, rest inside on two floors. Sorry I can't remember its name.

PS I forgot to add if your a quilter they have the same stuff as in the department stores much cheaper. I am not, can't sew at all, but a friend asked me to pick up some silk and for 10 bucks I got her 1/2 yard (appx.) of 6 different heavy silks with gold and silver threads there.

Wow, perfect! Thank you both!
I am staying near Awaza … it looks like a very reasonable subway trip to Nipponbashi from there. Thanks again!

The alleyway where you turn when your there you can see a McDonalds and large Hotel. If you miss it and go to second turn
just walk back.

Joanne, thanks for the great instructions and recommendation! I now have a lovely piece of silk that I'll work on converting into a blouse as soon as my jetlag passes.
For future travelers if any, the shop is called Toraya and they have a wide variety of fabrics, including some adorable cotton prints. All are labeled in detail in Japanese. I managed to communicate with a shop assistant well enough to get what I wanted, but if I were to do it again, I'd print out a list of fabric words in Japanese and try to hunt for what I wanted that way.
The only modification I'd make to Joanne's instructions is to never mind about the McDonalds and the large hotel ... the world being what it is nowadays, each of those parallel alleys has its own McDonalds and hotel. Thankfully, there are also plenty of other things that make the walk pleasant and interesting!
