Osaka Hotels

I am heading to Kyoto on July 16 and have found that all hotels are booked due to the festival.
Should I stay in Osaka or another city and take the train to kyoto? I am traveling with three children 6 to 16. I would like a hotel with a pool if possible, not mandatory. does anybody have suggestions where to stay. are there any good areas I should be looking at? is there anything on the coast? how far is the Train station from the recommended hotel?
