Okinawa - Where to stay?
My husband and I will be taking my elderly father to Naha, Okinawa in October, 2011. This will be the first visit for all of us. Any suggestions on where to stay?
My Dad cannot walk very far so we would like to be close to shops and such.
Price will be an issue since we will need two rooms. Clean and a bit above a basic business room would be great.
Thank you.

Hello Abigail, is this your first trip to Japan? If it is I would suggest Toyoko Inn Naha Asahi-basi Ekimae- only three minutes away from the monorail. Toyoko Inns are clean and nice for business hotels, and the room rate looks quite reasonable.

There are four Toyoko Inns in Naha; I've stayed at two of them:
Mie-Bashi Ekimae and Omoromachi Ekimae. Both of these are right by
monorail stations; the first is fairly close to Kokusai Dori which is
one of the main shopping streets, and the second is opposite a DFS
Department store (which has a car rental place in the basement). The
one mentioned by Sydney2k is further from its Monorail station and is
in the government district. However, although these and other
business hotels work well for solos, I wouldn't recommend them for
families as the rooms are very small and basic.
There's no central focus to the city, so unless you have some
specific goal in mind, I don't think it matters where you stay as long
as it's close to the monorail.
Frankly, there's not a lot to see in Naha (I'm not a shopper so may
have missed something in that line) so I wouldn't recommend spending
much time there. Most people head to the beaches or the smaller islands.

I tried to book at one of the Toyoko Inns in Naha, but they only seem to have rooms available for Toyoko Inn memebers and to get a membership you have to submit an application at the front desk.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

Abigail,
Toyoko Inns take reservations for their members at six months out. They open it up to the general public at 90 days out so if you want to stay at a Toyoko Inn you have to wait till 90 days out to make your reservation online. You shouldn't have a problem making the reservation then unless their is a festival happening at the time.
All that said we haven't been to Naha yet so can't make any recos but am researching for a future stay and have stayed in Comfort Inns a few times in Japan. They are clean with free internet and breakfast in the lobby and always centrally located.

Is your dad originally from Okinawa? Here is a site with a more varied selection of hotels on Okinawa. Many of us have used Japanican before and they are reliable.
