NYTimes article, "Searching for Burmese Jade, and Finding Misery"
A sad and scary article about jade mining in the state of Kachin and the impact on the local people. I thought some of you might find it an nteresting article, though it is very depressing to read.

There was an excellent book about this published in 2002
http://www.amazon.com/Stone-Heaven-U...tone+of+Heaven
It covers the same info in more detail. It seems nothing has changed since then.

A quick read in International News will find stories throughout the Third World-Sweat Shops in Bangladesh, children sold into slavery in India and child labour in the brick kilns of Pakistan. Travellers flock to Vietnam despite the awful cruelty to animals there and would you avoid Thailand because of widespread child prostitution?
You will be cosseted and guided in Putao and personally I would not hesitate.
