Trip Report New Beijing Hutong Walks

Jump to last reply Flag this topic

Back sometime in 2000 or 2001, I think, I posted an offer here to forward accounts of two walks around Beijing's back lanes (hutong) to anyone who wanted them, and I think about 300 people asked for copies before the posting finally dropped off the list somwhere.

Towards the end of 2002 I offered a revised version of the walks noting various changes, and offering more information on some of the buildings to be seen on the walks.

This again received nearly 300 other requests a further revision and expansion in mid-December 2005.

The document had become a rather untidy mess of addenda, so having walked the routes three more times since the last edition but having had no time to write up all the changes until now, I've finally tidied up the whole thing and added two further walks. I've moved from the unreliable Microsoft Word to Adobe pdf format, which has allowed me to add Chinese characters in a format everyone will be able to read.

The document is still very rough and unpolished, and I hope to improve it over the coming months and even add maps. But as departures to China are already beginning to pick up, and since I'm not sure when I'll have time to do much more, I thought I'd better make something available now. I hope some may find it useful.

When requesting a copy please be sure to INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS. You may wish to use a form such as 'me at my dot email dot address' in order to avoid the attentions of address-harvesting software.

With best wishes for an enjoyable journey to all those travelling to China,

          Peter N-H
