Need hotel recommendations in Kuala Lumpur, Siem Reap and Krabi

It's generally best if you give us specific numbers for your budget, since one person's "not to expensive" is another person's small fortune.

In KL, the Impiana KLCC was the best value hotel I've stayed at.

For Siem Reap, the Bopha Angkor is a popular choice. I recently stayed at the Soria Moria, and it is quite nice as well (and has free wi-fi as I recall).

In Krabi, the Sunrise Tropical is still my favorite place (it's in Railay, not Ao Nang).

For KL and Krabi, I'd like to spend $150 US per night, but I could go up to 200$ if it's for something special. In Siem Reap, I want to spend less than 50$ per night. As long as it's safe and clean. I'll be out most of the time visiting temples anyway.

I stayed at Ao Nang Princeville Resort for 2700 Baht/night (but that was in August, and not the 'better' season). The internet was not free, but there was a cheap internet place right next door to the hotel. Also lots of restaurants and shopping venues (and Haagen Dazs ice cream...) I would most definitely return to Krabi and the Ao Nang Princeville Resort. It was really lovely.

I've emailed both the Railay Tropical Sunrise and the Ao Nang Princeville Resort, they both seem lovely. I'm just not sure if I should stay in Ao Nang or Railay.

Michael could verify this, but I think, if I'm not mistaken, that you must take a (short) boat ride to get to Railay from Ao Nang. I was under that impression when I was there, anyway. I guess I would prefer not to have to take a boat to go to the 'bigger' town area for shopping and restaurants. I've not been to Railay so I'm not sure how much of that is right there... or only by boat. Hopefully Michael will tell you.

In any case, I loved Krabi!

If your budget allows La Residence D'Angkor in Siem Reap is lovely. The pool their in particular was a welcome oasis after a long day spent exploring the temples.

gottlovepugs, we're staying at La Residence d'Angkor in early 2011. Glad to hear the pool is great. But for the OP, there's no way it's close to his "under $50 a night" budget.

At under $50 p.n. check out http://www.peaceofangkor.com/ . Set old colonial house in a quiet road and within walking distance of the main town, We stayed there in 2008. Spacious rooms good breakfasts. The owner is a retired photographer and runs specialist photo tour of Angkor ( as well as other tours). We had been to SR a couple of times before and so opted for hiring a tuk tuk and driver for a couple of days. This was arranged by the guesthouse for $14 a day and was great value for money. The driver spoke assable english and took us everywhere including many places we had never seen before and managed to avoid the hordes of other tourist which are a fact of life these days.

I can recommend the Concorde Hotel near the Hard Rock Cafe. Get a Premier room that includes breakfast and 1-way transport to airport. Very spaciuos and clean. I think the current price is 440 MYR.

I would advise against the Ritz Carlton, JW Marriott, or Renaissance as they are very dated. I've stayed in all 4 hotels that I've mentioned.

Kuala Lumpur : Maya Hotel. Got a nice rate. It's close to the Petronas Towers and I got a free upgrade to a suite.

Siem Reap: Kool Hotel. 39 USD per night with a free upgrade to their best room. Good rating on Tripadvisor.

Krabi (Ao Nang): Phu Petra. Got a nice rate also with tons of freebies. Good rating on Tripadvisor.

Highly recommend the Kool Hotel. My son and I stayed there for a week back in June. Rooms comfortable with all the amenities you need plus a nice restaurant and a good pool to cool off after a hot and dusty day in SR.

The staff are amazing at the Kool Hotel. I have travelled a lot both for work and pleasure and the service level is second to none. In fact some of the five star places should send their staff to the Kool Hotel for some tips. Say hit to Sothey and his team - they are amazing.

We recently stayed at the Claremont Angkor in Siem Reap and were more than happy with it. The rooms are less than $50/night and are huge and comfortable with a nice breakfast included in the rooftop restaurant.

The nice things about the Claremont include: (1) it is located on a quiet side street but very close to the centre of town so you can walk there in about 20 mins or take a brief tuktuk ride; (2) the rooms are very comfortable with all western-style amenities and (3) the staff are delightful.
