Nan- Worth a side trip?

We will be arriving in Thailand overland from Laos. We will probably spend one night in Chiang Rai and then have a 4-5 days to play with before we need to be in Bangkok. We were thinking of hiring a car for a side trip to Nan to do a few treks/hikes around the area. Not somewhere we have been before.

Anyone been there? if so is it worth the effort? Any other suggestions for spending a few days in the north?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
