Mumbai and tiger trek
Is there a sensible way to do 4 or 5 days in Mumbai followed by 3 or 4 days in Ranthambhore National Park. Would it be better to leave for New York from Delhi after the park?

Well, 2 night stay is enough to cover the attractions of Mumbai. So if you have some additional nights you can add Aurangabad in your tour.
I will suggest to consider Kanha or Bandhavgarh instead of Ranthambore as they are much bigger and the forests are quite dense. Even the tiger density is more in these Parks. This will also allow you to fly in and out from Mumbai
However, If you want to visit Ranthambore only, you can do so. Form Mumbai, you can fly to Jaipur and than drive (4 hrs) to Ranthambore. Or you can take an over night Train to Ranthambore from Mumbai.
From Ranthmabore you can take take the train to Delhi. Train Journey is of around 7 hrs and it quite comfortable.

Thanks for your reply and your information. The reason I chose Ranthambore is that one of the Fodor books said that it had fewer trees and one might stand a better chance of actually seeing tigers through the trees.
But I will do some research on the other places you mentioned and I thank you again.

It will also depend upon the time of the year you plan to visit. If you are doing it in November or December (early), than Ranthambhore is very good. The grasslands of Kanha have not dried out and stand shoulder high concealing the game inside. Kanha will be an excellent choice late January & February on-wards. You have a larger variety of wildlife there, the Gaur (Indian Bison) and the graceful Barasingha and I would barter all my visits to the game reserves, just to see him leap on full gallop!
As for accomodation, The Taj Banjaar Tola & Flame of the Forest are 'the places' to stay. These locate on the river Banjjar which of course dry up in the summers but leave the tracks of all animals on it...one of the greatest pleasure is to identify the owners of those tracks. The wild dogs locally called Dholes can be heard moving about in the jungle.
Fly to Nagpur and then about 5.3 hrs over a picturesque road to Kanha.
Enough is written on Ranthambhore to warrant further investigation.
