I don't know how much it costs but I do know the price is fixed if you go to the taxi desk there, pay and get a voucher - really simple process...

Make sure you take a legit licensed taxi, don't take a private one. The legitimate ones are the ones you pay for at the taxi desk as described above. If you're staying at a hotel, they may provide transfer shuttle.

Once you pay for the taxi at the airport, make sure it's clear with the driver, before you begin, that you don't owe any more money (ie for a stop at the gas station, extra traffic, etc.).

I agree with the above posts. Take a taxi from the authorised desk, make SURE it is registered with the police before you leave. They will ask for your name, destination etc and make a note of the cab's number and driver's name. It would be a good idea if you were to do the same.
By the way, the fare should be around Rs.500 - 600 (10 dollars) in an a/c vehicle, give or take.

Just another bit of advice, make sure you have the full address and phone numbers of your destination and verify that the driver knows how to get there. Some cities in India are simply huge and even drivers don't know where everything is.

After a long haul we preferred our HOtel to pick us up. In the scheme of things it was inexpensive - $45 - but at 1am landing after 2o hours of transit it was well worth it - I would investiagte to see if your hotle offers this.

As noted, make sure you take one from the autorized desk. The taxis are very inexpensive I thought.
