Mt. Fuji / Mount Fuji - general questions

Hello all! Ok, plane tickets are booked, hotel is booked and now I'm in the midst of doing research on where to go, what to do, what to see, etc, etc. One of the major things I do want to do when I go to Japan is to do a day visit to Hakone / Mt. Fuji. I've been searching the net for tour operators and have noticed that they all take you there by bus and not by the Shinkasen train. Why is that? I know you can travel back to Tokyo by the Shinkasen, so I thought it odd that they all want to take you there by bus. Has anyone done a tour group to Mt. Fuji? If so, is there a particular one you would recommend? What's the trip out to Mt. Fuji like? Do you see mainly cities and suburbs or more rural environments? Again, thanks in advance for any info!
