Mid priced hotel suggestions in Bangkok
I'm looking for suggestions as to where to stay in Bangkok in March. I'm looking to spend less than $100 a night. We will definitely be doing lots of shopping and going to Night Bazaar/Silom/Sukumvit area so I prefer to be close to skytrain. I'm considering Novotel Lotus but I don't know how convenient it is.
Also, do I get better rates by booking it directly online or wait until I get there to reserve room?

You'll get better rates by booking ahead, either with the hotel directly or with one of the booking sevices like www.sawasdee.com or www.agoda.com

Have a look at the Silom Serene http://www.silom-serene.com/ It has a great location and is well within your budget.

There're still a lot of nice hotels available in Bangkok for under $100, although many of them are not in the best locations. A few suggestions:
Travellers
Ibis, Siam
Asia Hotel
Ambassador
Unico (Several branches)
Chaophraya Park
All the above are within walking distance of the subway or skytrain. The Holiday Inn is just over $100 but it is a great location.

Novotel lotus is in a good location with an easy walk to the skytrain and the upmarket Emporuim shopping mall. Not a bad hotel but just not great for the money.
A much better hotel is the Amoma located in a great location opposite the nrely renovated large Central World Plaza. For shopping you cant find a better location for the price.
Also as mentioned the Asia hotel is right by the skytrain station
You might consider the Bossotel which is cheaper but close to the river and easy walk to skytrain/river ferry.

Agree with both Bob & Kathie about agoda <http://www.agoda.com/asia/thailand/b...nn_hotel.html> & HI in Ploenchit. We have booked one night in HI BKK with agoda for $116 room only. ICH website rate is $132 <http://www.ichotelsgroup.com> .For the location they say it can't be beat. Hotel describes : The entrance to BTS Chitlom is located at door step of the hotel
Something for you to look at through all the excellent suggestions.

We did a lot of researching and decided on the Adelphi Suites (new in November 2007) near the Nana BTS station.
Includes kitchenette, wifi, and other amenities.
We almost chose the Majestic Grande, but are happy with our decision.
Carol is staying there in just a few days and has promised to report back. The reviews on tripadvisor have been very good, too.

In Thailand a hotel that costs $100 per night is closer to "luxury" level.
Mid priced hotels are closer to $50 per night.
No star hotels in the 1000 baht to 1500 baht range are not too bad. In this price range they will have hot water, private bath/toilet, cable TV, security box, maid service, etc.
Landmark Hotel might do for you. Asia Hotel is not that bad if you want to conserve cash for more shopping. The Asia is right on a Skytrain stop.
Another hotel that is within walking distance to the Nana Skytrain stop is the Amari Boulevard Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi 5. Foodland Supermarket across the street has a good in store restaurant open 24 hours a day. (Down the soi a little bit is the Fortuna Hotel for half the price with an "all you can eat" breakfast buffet open to the public.)
If this is your first time in Thailand I would book at least the first few nights just so you have a place to head directly to from the airport.
Good luck.
