May 2014 Honeymoon in SE Asia
I have some time to look into the best places to honeymoon. My fiancé and I are stuck on the idea of SE Asia. We are rookies with this area and would love any suggestions. Reason for May is he is on Summer break from Grad School. We can take 2 weeks for our Honeymoon and was going to try to do it around Memorial Day. We are a very active couple would love to do some adventurous stuff and then some relaxing things. Maybe half and half. Budget is probably $5000-7000USD.
Suggestions on places to go that are Adventurous or activities?
Suggestions on low key beaches or places to relax and enjoy each other’s company?
Open to countries, was originally interested in Thailand as a start but would like to venture out.
Thanks,

with 2 wks i would suggest no more than 2, or maybe 3 places..
your budget is fine... hope that does not include airfare, but if it does that would work too..
how much would you like to spend per night for hotels?
i always suggest thailand for honeymoons because it offers so much for a moderate price..
bali is another possibility for late may---i love the gangga room at alam shanti hotel near ubud...
bkk has tons of hotels... many of us love the riverside hotels and may the prices are reasonable... i also love the jw marriott at khao lak for your beach time or amari vogue near krabi.

May is a good time for Indonesia, after the rainy season and before the high tourist season. The most honeymoon friendly destination is Bali which can be combined with stops in Java for a wider range of experience.
There are many opportunities for adventure travel in Indonesia: scuba/snorkling, mountain climbing, trekking, rafting, water sports. And many options for indulgence (especially in Bali): spas, yoga, good food, sunsets, shopping, clubbing.
For two weeks I'd suggest a few days each in Central Java (Borobudur Monument, Yogyakarta), East Java Mt. Bromo, Bali Ubud, Bali Seminyak Beach.
There are more luxury resorts in Bali than would fill a year of honeymoons, but to start I'd look at Como Shambhala, the Legian Bali, Amankila. And Amanjiwo in Central Java. If those are too pricey, there are plenty of others across all price ranges.
You also have the option of renting a private villa with a pool and a full staff. This is a good site for villa shopping, http://balihomeparadise.com/

You can't go wrong either way - unless you try to cram in too many stops!
Bali is wonderfully romantic. You could combine it with Java (that would be my choice - read my recent Java report) or with Lombok which is lovely and quiet.
Thailand gives you access to a wonderful variety of places and activities. Beaches, of course, but also Bangkok (my favorite city in the world). And if you want to be more adventuresome, a side trip to Angkor Wat.
With two weeks, three stops are an absolute maximum. The problem with trips to SE Asia is always choosing which places to go, which to cut. I've been visiting SE Asia annually since the mid-1980s, and I still have too many places I want to go every year.

amin: I am planning a trip to Borneo for April-May 2014 and am interested in an itinerary that has wildlife at one of the lodges, snorkeling, trekking at Mulu National Park plus some time in KK and Kuching. Can you suggest a local Malaysian company who can help me plan a trip that has these elements?

We did Borneo a few years ago and it was the trip of a lifetime. We had a few nights in Kuala Lumpur then a few nights in Kota Kinabalu (where you could climb Mt Kinabalu) then we did a trip to the Danum Valley where we stayed at Borneo Rainforest Lodge and trekked into the rainforest where we were lucky enough to see Orangutan in the wild - this was mind-blowing, we then finished off the trip at a beautiful beach resort in Langkawi. One thing to note - the beaches in Borneo aren't that great, so head to another island for your beach time.
susiesan: We used Borneo Eco Tours for our rainforest trip and booking our accommodation at the Rainforest Lodge, they were brilliant and the trip, spectacular. They also do lots of other touring as well http://www.borneoecotours.com
