Manila or Ho Chi Minh City
Hello,
I have 5 days to spend in one of these two places.
Which one would you suggest? I don't have any particular things i am interested in - just looking to get lost for a few days. Both seem to have places to go on good day/ over night trips to escape the crowds. I really cant decide between the two.
Can anyone whos been to both help throw some light. If it helps, i have been to S.E Asia before - Thailand and Singapore. This will be just a 5-day trip from Hong Kong - so no other itinerary logistics. Also, I travel alone.
Thanks.

Been to Saigon twice and Manila once. I would definitely return to Saigon. Last time I took a 10 hour ride with Saigon Riders. That was an amazing day. Admittedly, I was only in Manila for 2 days as a weekend stopover from Japan to S'pore. I did not feel safe alone at night and the traffic was horrendous.

Been a while since I have been to Viet Nam but HCMC is a great place. good food, good coffee, good banh mi (baguette rolls) cheap beers. interesting markets (Ben thanh)
Neither place is what I would call a good place to escape the crowds.

Both are interesting city, though not at the level of Hong Kong or Bangkok... Although I personally liked Manila better, I would probably recommend Saigon for 5 days, because there is more stuff to do in and around the city.
Check out my trip reports on each of them for more inspiration and tips:

Here in Manila, a lot of people speak english that is why it won't be a problem for you to talk to people like for asking directions and stuff. If active nightlife is what you are looking for, choose Manila. But if you want to have a beach trip or other recreational activities, you may want to try the neighboring provinces of Manila.
