Malaysia or Thailand
Hi,
I am going to India for a couple of day in December for a wedding. I have the balance 12 days to spend somewhere. I was thinking of somewhere in South East Asia. If I have 12 days, should I do Thailand or Malaysia. I would prefer doing Thailand, but I'm not sure if 12 days is enough.

Since December is fantastic weatherwise, I would do Thailand. With 12 days, you could easily make it to 2/3 destinations:
3-4 days in Bangkok at the beginning
2-3 days in the north (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Golden Triangle)
2-3 days beach location
and end up with another 1-2 days in Bangkok before leaving
Just a suggestion.

You can certainly visit Thailand for 12 days, you just need to choose a reasonable number of places to visit. In that time, I think three places is the maximum. Carol has given you an idea of how you might distribute your time. Consider what you want most to see/do/experience in Thailand and make your decision on that basis.
Malaysia has many options as well. But again, there is so much to see and do in Malaysia, you'd have to choose carefully.

if you are going all the way to india, why not spend the time there?
but thailand is a second good destination....i much prefer it to malaysia and it is generally cheaper...
i would spend about 1/2 the time in bkk and the rest at either a beach location or up north....i think 3 destinations in thailand would be too much moving around...

My original though was “Wow, you are going to India at the very best time of year and want to leave it to go someplace else?” But I see from your other posts that you hold an Indian passport, so perhaps you feel you have done enough traveling there. If not, I would say to consider places you have not been.
If you go to Thailand, you can’t see all of it in 12 days, but can get a reasonable view. Note that Christmas week is THE busiest time at beach resorts in Phuket and elsewhere, so you would have to book quite soon, and there may be a minimum stay required at the better hotels. If your trip would be before Christmas, you should be fine.
Malaysia is quite interesting, but without knowing your interests it is hard to say. I would note that if you want beaches, then Thailand might be a better choice because the weather along the lovely east coast beach areas of Malaysia is quite wet in December, and the rain forest areas like Taman Negara can be quite wet too I believe. See weatherbase.com and other sites. Conversely, places like Phuket in Thailand are really at their best in December. But if you have other interests, then Malaysia may be a good choice (excellent mix of cuisines there.) If you wanted to combine Singapore with Malaysia, that may be a good option, esp when coordinating flights from India. I would also note that the weather in Hong Kong is just perfect in December, and there is a ton to see and do there too. But again, not knowing what your interests are, it’s hard to make a specific recco. Do you want beach, city, shopping, restaurants, museums or countryside?
