Malaysia & Maldives
Want to do Malaysia and Maldives in february 2014.
One week in each place or so. Any suggestions?
I am thinking of Penang and one other place. We will flying through Singapore ( from Toronto) and then to Maldives from there. We will buy local tickets to Malaysia.
And Robert we will not be in Singapore 1st !
Miss Dogster. Didnt he have a place he liked in Malaysia!

Penang is a good place to start in Malaysia. Lots to see and do. If you are there a week there are nice beaches also.
Be sure and post a trip report about your trip. We don't hear much about the Maldives.

Actually the dogster was a Mr. and if you did not know he passed away last July. If you click my name you can find the thread about it in the Asia forum where you can see his realy name, Nigel Triffett and see how talented he really was. Among other feats he designed and produced the last act in the opening ceremony of the Sydney Olympics in 2000.
RIp Nigel. You are missed.

But if you are headed to the Maldives, you don't want to spend time in Langkawi - it's an international beach resort.
If it were me (and it isn't) I'd probably spend the whole time in Penang, then get to my international gateway (Singapore?) a day early.
Jacket - read the whole Last section. She refers to dogster as a he, "Miss dogster" is short for I miss dogster."
Dogster didn't do much/maybe any traveling in Malaysia. He did suggest a place to stay in Penang that is owned by people he knew from Sri Lanka.

There are heaps of resorts in the Maldives, I've only been to 6. Can recommend Taj Exotica, Kanuhura, IOVillas at Angsana Velavaru and Constance Halaveli. Trying out another 2 (Anantara Veli and Beach House at Iruveli) in December. This may help you decide:

Kathie is right, don't bother with Langkawi if you are doing the Maldives. Penang is great for food and temples etc. Malacca is popular for daytrippers. It was a colonial outpost for the Portuguese, Dutch and finally the British. For rural Malay culture you would go to the east coast of peninsular Malaysia, not sure if it will still be the monsoon season. If you are inclined to the more exotic, look into Sabah and Sarawak (Malaysian states) on the island of Borneo.

>>>And Robert we will not be in Singapore 1st !<<<
(Well, hope springs eternal...)
Now, warm greetings emdee, and early congratulations on forthcoming Malaysian / Maldives holiday. (And please allow me the opportunity to once again thank you for your brilliant (Thailand) trip report, describing your time in the Krungthep Wing at the Shangri-La hotel. Your 'personal butler' at the SL, Khun Sophie, is indeed quite the gem. Been a while since I've stayed at the SL for work (these past two evenings, its been the Four Seasons for meetings - gracious as ever), and will always have the fondest memories of Khun Sophie and her colleagues.)
Wish I could help you with your enquiries, but Malaysia is not on my current Asia business travel circuit and have yet to experience the Maldives.
Should your beach resort plans change a bit, will go ahead with a bit of a shameless promotion for that little serene Thai hideaway, the Amanpuri. (My brief review for Fodors doesn't begin to do her justice.) Another long weekend is planned for later this month; nice yearly tradition with great staff and friends.
Wherever you stay, enjoy, emdee, and thanks again for your wondrous writing. Joyous and rather early weekend wishes to you and all, as this current ~ 16 day trans-pacific business trip concludes today with SQ975 J from BKK back home to Singapore.
Good travel,
macintosh (robert)

Jacket, I knew the dog was a man when two years ago he put his name in an email. We corresponded a bit by email.
Kathie, I just remember that in one of his writings dogster mentioned some place in Malaysia that he liked. Just miss his presence generally though he has been lying low for the last year.
Robert - Singapore F is out but J is on the table as they fly to maldives! We are debating Malaysia vs Myanmar for the week. If the latter then we may just be able to sneak a couple of days in that haven of sanity in BKK. We have been travelling to south america, French Polynesia, europe in the last year - did a trip report on my camino last month.
I am not a big fodorite like some of you just come here from time to time for help, inspiration and enjoyment.
Cilla we dont want to spend too much in the Maldives and want an all inclusive. Thanks for your suggestions. We shall review and investigate.
The trip is not until Feb 2014 so lots of time for planning.
Thanks all.
