Mae Hong Sorn loop - places to stay?

We am planning spend around 8/9 days to driving the Mae Hong Son loop over the the New Year period. can anyone recommend places to stay in Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Sorn, Pai & Mai Sariang? We are looking for mid-range places, a little bit different and preferably Thai owned. Also, is it necessary to book in advance at this time of year? Any other tips/info on the area would be greatly appreciated!

We stayed at the Fern Resort, just outside of Mae Hong Son. It has beautiful landscaped areas, a pool, rice paddies, bungalows and a restaurant tucked up against the jungle. There is a shuttle into town. You can do a two hour hike from the resort into the jungle, with the resort's dogs as "guides." We did day trips with Sunflower Cafe's guide, arranged at their cafe. We did the Lod Cave (well worth it) as a day trip from Mae Hong Son. Have fun.

crellston-Fern Resort is a magic place as GBL says. We loved the walk with the dogs & the peaceful atmosphere which pervades the resort. It truly is a wonderful place to get back in touch with nature! We paid US40 per night for a big self contained villa and around US3-4 for lunch & US7 for dinner. The Karen staff do wonderful weaving which is for sale there at the resort.

In Chiang Mai stay at tamarind village - pull up some recent posts on the hotel and you will also get advice on how to get the nest rate - costs $35-50/night incl breakfast depending on how u book it and season.
