We will be in Singapore in April for 6 full days. I'd like to shop for clothes but have no interst in designer/high end. Which mall has the best prices on cheap, casual, everyday clothes? Is there one mall that is known for being full of all discount stores? I'm also looking for a nice watch in the US $50-75 price range.

Unless you are small, both in weight and stature, this might be a problem. I am 5'8" and could rarely find clothes in Singapore. Along Orchard Rd though, there are lots of great places to shop. I used to like Isetan. If you have something in your closet that you love and would like to duplicate in a different fabric, Singapore would be a good place to do it. Dressmakers and tailors can usually make copies with your fabric quickly.

I am small, 5'2 and 114 pounds so I'll be able to buy the local clothing.
I had clothes made for me in Vietnam 2 years ago and I'm sure the prices are higher and I got spoiled there. So it's going to be off the rack for me. I'll check out Isetan. Any other ideas?

Robinsons has lots of clothes mainly for local market and prices are reasonable. Lots of shops and malls, another place i like is Bugis Junction. If you put in your post title 'Singapore' you would get a lot more answers as no one would otherwise know where you are asking for Information for. Try it again perhaps with the heading:-
" Singapore local clothes shopping tips please"

Theres a departments store at Bugis Junction, I think it has a japanese name, anyway you can't miss it and I particularly remember they had a great selection of very fashionable and distinct watches, it was a great department store, nice place, even I enjoyed it!

There are not really any malls here known for discount clothing stores. Wisma Atria (mall on Orchard Rd)has a lot of shops that cater to shoppers looking for trendier merchandise, such as Top Shop.
Takeshimaya, on Orchard Rd, connected to Ngee Ann City, is probably our most upmarket dept store, along with Tang's, at the intersection of Scott's Rd. and Orchard Rd.
There are some shops around town called Export Fashion, that sell heavily discounted name brand clothes from places like Banana Republic, JCrew and Talbots. It's a bit hit and miss if they will have stuff in your size when you visit. Also many of the clothes have the labels cut out, so you need to know your merchandise if particularly care about what brand you are buying. For example I have purchased a Talbot's shirt there for about $8US, that would normally retail over there for about $45. The best Export Fashion is the one at Tanglin Mall (NOT Tanglin Shopping Center, which is mostly overpriced antiques.) There are also a few inexpensive shoe stores in Tanglin Mall.

I love the British India stores. Their clothes remind me a bit of Catherine Deneuve in the movie,"Indochine".There's one in the Raffles City Mall(there's also a grocery store in the basement of that mall while you're there and a Mrs. Fields cookie place and a Subway sandwich place) and other ones in Singapore just ask for the other locations.Last August, I bought their version of a beaded, Nonya kabaya shirt which was quite beautiful that I paired with old Indonesian batik fabric(that I tied into a sarong) that I bought at a friend's antique store in Singapore...Naga Arts and Antiques 19, Tanglin Road, Tanglin Shopping Center...She has some beautiful pieces of old cotton pieces of Indonesian batik...I'm into eclectic dressing.I've been to more than one location of British India in Singapore.Try to catch their sales. There is also a large British India store in Tanglin Mall. Their stuff can be pricy, but it's very beautiful. I bought a top there for a Deepeavalli celebration last year.

If you are looking for inexpensive kebaya, sarongs, tops with Chinese style collars, etc. you should visit the 2nd floor of the Holland Village Shopping Center. Also, LOTS of inexpensive, casual dresses, shoes etc. there. Don't know why I didn't think of that one before.

Yes! This is the kind of shopping advice I need. I like the sound of that Export Fashion. Does it have men's clothing as well? My DH is not a vey big guy so I hope he can find clothes that will fit him. As we are staying at Swissotel Stamford, we'll be right by Raffles City Mall for the shops there.

Is Singapore a good place to get inexpensive eyeglasses made up? We've bought them in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur in the past when there at a big discount from US prices. We can bring our prescriptions with us if glasses are cheap in S'pore

we prefer js thai silk on the ground floor of the river city shopping center, next to the sheraton orchid hotel on the river....the shop is opposite the up escalator and info booth at the sheraton end of the building....we see ms yai....they deal primarily in silk but also have some other fabrics or will get you whatever you might want....

the other shop often mentioned here is cotton house on the ground floor of the mini-mall in back of the oriental hotel...
