Laos question: Phonsavan. Anyone ever stayed there?

Our family will be spending a night in Phonosavan, and the guide books are not very helpful when it comes to describing budget family accommodation. Has anybody on this forum ever stayed there, and can you recommend a hotel for us? Thanks for all suggestions!

Alan p219 LP Laos Jan 2002 says
Saingtavanh-new hotel 10 fairly clean rooms with "hard mattresses" US3.40 double (would be around US7 by now!) No phone or email! Just the place for a resourceful traveller like yourself!

Seriously there are lots of budget places mentioned so doubt you'll have any problem. Watch out for unexploded ordnance (UXO)LP says, in fields around Phonsavan. That's all you need! All the best & have fun!

Hard mattresses! Horrors! Looks like I'll have to stay at the Phonsavan Sheraton (or was that the Hyatt)?
