land trip from india to kathmandu

Dear all travellers,

we are planning to take a bus or a train from India to Kathmandu. Can you advise us what would be the best means of transportation (except for plane) to get there, and which route should we follow?
Also, what is nice to do in Kathmandu, for a couple of days?

Thank you all! Cosima

No trains in Nepal.

Take the train from Delhi to Gorkapur, then the bus to the border. Walk across the border, then you can take a bus to Kathmandu.

Watch out for travel agent touts in Gorkapur, just walk to bus station, don't let the agents do anything.

What to do in Kathamndu . . . visit the Monkey Temple. Hire bikes and cycle there it's not hard or that far and great to do on a bike. Take a bus trip to the foothills of the himalayas and watch the sun set. Have dinner at KC's in Thamal (assuming KC's is still there - it was an institution for a while). Visit the house of Kumari (the living Godess) and you may actually see her looking out the windows. Visit the markets and pick up a semi "antique" bargain (a mask or a prayer flag). Just walk and get lost, it's a great city.
