Krabi, Koh Lanta or other
I am considering a visit to Southern Thailand. My spouse and I are wanting to snorkel Koh Rok Nok and Phi Phi Island but also do some things inland and get a feel for the local culture and food. We enjoy hiking and might want to try the Elephant Trekking. We love nature and being outside. We like luxury resorts but we are also fine with something that is just fun and a wonderful experience along the lines of 3 stars.
If we stay in Krabi, will the snorkeling boat trips feel out of the way? Are there any nice beaches near Krabi or Railay in which to snorkel?
Do you have hike suggestions or adventure suggestions for us?
Should we split the time up in Koh Lanta and Krabi (we have a week there) and then we will head to Khao Lak.
Grateful for any resort suggestions as well as snorkel or activity based adventures.
Thank you!

Please don't do elephant trekking. The elephants are treated horribly. If you want the opportunity to interact with elephants, you really need to go to the north and visit he Elephant Nature Park.
In general, I recommend that people choose one beach area, as you lose much of a day when you change locations. Krabi and Ko Lanta are both fine, as is Koh Lak. There are also areas of Phuket that will meet your needs. If you want hotel/resort recommendations, you'll need to give us a budget in dollars, Baht, Euro or Pounds.
If you want a sample of Thai culture, you'll need to go somewhere other than an international beach resort. I highly recommend time in Bangkok, and some people love Chiang Mai,
A day trip to PhiPhi could be subtitled "The Worst of PhiPhi" as you will be there when it is mobbed by day trippers. There are lots of available day trips to snorkel - book once you are there. The one day trip I do recommend is the John Grey Sea Canoes.

Please stay away from ElephantTrekking camps. Kathie is correct. The Elepants are treated like tractors. But, tractors are given gas. Elephants are starved beaten with hooks, No water...no food.
Blinded, broken backs, hips due to riding them.Even stabbed to work.....
Into submission.
Elephants back are not made to be ridden there is a bone there.
Unlike a horse. All about money. Please educate yourself and others.
Lek and Derrick who own the Elephant Nature Park near Chang Mai spend ther whole like doing rescues from these sort of horror camps.
I go once a yr to visit the park for a few days. You will love it!

Thank you so much! We would like to spend a week in Khao Lak and stay in a small, service oriented resort on a gorgeous beach. We can spend $200-$300 if necessary, but I have seen some 5 star resorts for around $100. We want our trip to be special, and for us that means good service, a nice beach, an unpretentious resort.
In terms of what we consider a nice beach, a good walking beach is always nice as is a spectacular or noteworthy view. I am unfamiliar with the beaches there.
We are not megaresort people. We prefer small, intimate resorts.
Suggestions?

Friends of mine love the JW Marriott at Khao Lak. It's not small, but they report the service is wonderful. I took a quick look on Booking.com and there are so many options for you! I doubt you'll find a true 5* resort for $100 (I'm guessing you might have been looking at off-season prices) but many 5* places are very reasonably priced.
When is your trip?

we are 2 of those people... the jw Marriott in khao lak is simply fabulous... there is an onsite diving group/shop which might help with snorkeling alternatives.
the beach is simply fabulous as are the pools and 3.1 Kilometer swimming lagoon which snakes through the resort.
the breakfast is not to be beat and is the only time when you see lots of people.
an elephant visits the property once or twice a week to be touched and admired by the guests
