Koh Samui in January - Western Tourists?

I am a 24 year old male travelling with a college buddy (also 24 male) to Koh Samui for 10 days in January.

We are wondering if there is a good mix of western tourists in the night life...we are both very excited about meeting the locals, but its also nice to meet up with other tourists, be they American, European, Australian...to share stories, etc.

What would you say the complement of Thai versus non-Thai would be in the Samui night life?

You will find plenty of Western visitors to Koh Samui in January.

Thanks Kathie - Would you say the demographic leans towards couples, honeymooners, families, or just people that have come to have fun individually or with friends...

Koh Samui is full of western tourists. The only Thais you will find in Chaweng at night are those who are working( mostly female!)Tourists are of all ages but the majority would be your age.

As already said almost all tourists will be 'western tourists' as you describe. Few Thai or Asia people visit Koh Samui.

Thanks again all- now, what if I wanted to mingle with the local population night-life wise- are there other options off Chaweng that tend to attract fewer visitors and more of the locals?

Anyone stayed at the Malibu beach resort - being from Santa Monica, CA, I cant say I'm too excited about travelling 9000 miles to stay at a place named after a city 4 miles from my apartment here at home, but it looks like a great beachfront value on Chaweng. Other suggestions?

I am under the impression that October November is the true rainy season, December lingers, and January is basically out of it...

Is that incorrect?

rsimper - you're correct about the rainy season. you might get the occassion brief shower in Jan and some overcast days, but for the most part expect hot sunny days.

thais are afraid of the sun.. they may turn into an ugly dark person.. So thais tend not too visit beaches. and if they do they sit under a massive canopy of umbrelas.

I've never been down south.. but I'd say the only thai ladies or locals you may find at the clubs will most likely be prostitues. that dosn't nessererly mean they will tell you ar charge you.. especially if you are a young blond guy from California.

samui is a huge backpacer haven so there will be tons of young travelers all over the place.
