K.L. Ideas on Hotel so on.
Hey guys,
Planning another trip to Asia Nov thru March.Do all the usual spots plus New into the mix.
Never been to K.L.How many days? Hotels?What About Sapa?Guide needed.

KL, IMO, just needs a few days. I've been there several times, but have never fallen in love with it. Lots of nice hotels.
Sapa, no need for a guide. You might want a guide if you are doing a full day of hiking, but otherwise no need.
Where else are you going this trip?

We arrive in KL in. Nov at the start of a long trip around Asia and will be staying for 5 days. There is not as much to see as in some other Asian capitals but plenty to hold your interest for a few days. The food scene is excellent in KL and reason enough to spend a few days.
As for hotels, depends what price range you are looking at. We really enjoyed the Mandarin Oriental and Shangri La on previous trips. For this one we are on a budget and have booked at http://www.theyard.com.my/theyard-boutique-hotel/ a good location in Bukit Bintang.
Sapa town doesn't require a guide but, as Kathie suggests, get one for hiking or for an overnight stay in one of the villages. Easily arranged at any hotel in so Sapa town on arrival but make sure they are from Sapa and not Hanoi and speak the minority tribes dialect.

I've stayed in KL in the shopping areas. Many hotels are so convenient with only a short walk to lots of malls.
We did a few tours with companies we saw from the hotels at the brochure. Not sure of details but they were ok. Many tours go to the same places such as Batu Caves. I guess in this instance Trip Advisor is your friend.
I often end an overseas trip with a 3 to 5 days in KL to adjust my body clock. This was more than plenty for me. There were not that many big ticket places to see so a few days I think will be fine.

I did KL back in 2002 and spent 3 nights there, I think it was. I wish I had had more time and have thus planned 6 nights this coming winter.
As for hotels, one of my best friends and I stayed at the Ritz Carlton which was great and walking distance to shopping as we walked a lot. Back then a standard room was only $105. a night and we ended up upgraded to the private floor in which we had to insert a key into the elevator panel to reach it. It hit me that I forgot to return the key and will return it on the upcoming trip. LOL!
My friend and I had fun in KL and we hired a private driver, on the street, but one that we had seen hanging around at our hotel picking up passengers. We used the private driver for places in the city that were too far to walk to and also on our shopping sprees as we could shop and then he'd be in the car to hold our packages so that we could go out and shop some more. It was great having him and was well worth it at 38 MYR-$7.00 an hour back then. The private car services were charging $15.00 an hour.
Plus, our driver drove us to some places that we didn't know about and also to some tiny, alley, shopping places that I had researched before leaving home. I really wish I could find him again on my upcoming trip.
Plus, since I like to do photography, I'd go out with the private driver in the early morning to photograph places. Having him saved a lot of time and we got a lot accomplished in a short time. We didn't do the real touristy stuff as that wasn't the purpose of our trip. We were shopping at interior design places as I was helping my friend with the interior design of her new townhouse back here in L.A. We were there to purchase fabrics and items for her place so we saw a different KL which was also fun.
On my return trip to KL, I won't be doing a hotel, but will have an apartment.

I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental, which was very nice and in a good location. Concierge were great and they arranged our tickets up the Petrona Towers so we didn't have to queue.
I would say 3 days in KL. ( personally I would skip the Batu caves.....)
