KL Hotel for 5 nights
We are trying to decide between Sheraton Imperial, Shangri-La and Ritz-Carlton. The Sheraton is looking like our first choice - mainly for its location. We want to see all the usual touristy things and be close to local transport links. Any comments please?

Hi,
We stayed at the Shangri-la for 1 night[wish it had been longer!!]in april .We found it to be a great hotel, the location is excellant, you can easily walk to the petronas towers and the menara tower. We were on the 19th floor, and out of our picture window we had a great view of the menara tower[have a meal at the revolving resturant at the top-fab].The room was lovely, with a huge bed ,one of the most comfortable we have ever slept in.Being there for only 1 night,we did'nt really get a good look at the facilities, but we had a very quick look at the gym and pool, and both seemed great. We are going back to KL next march, and will be staying at the shangri-la for 3 nights then.

I travel to KL for biz every month and am familiar with the hotels there. While the Sheraton has the best rooms, its location is not as good. It's in the middle of "nowhere".No subway yet.
The Shangri La is in a better location close to nite spots and the KL tower.HOwever only its club rooms are renovated and nice. The standard room is showing its age with threadbare carpets and stained toilets. No subway yet.
The Ritz Carlton has excellent service and huge rooms and it's in a good location near the Bukit Bintang shopping and eating places. Its frontage is not as good tho as it is located in an alley. No subway yet.
Perhaps the best hotel in terms of location and rooms is the Mandarin Oriental beside the Petronas twin towers. It is beside the KLCC subway stn and has links to most local attractions like CHinatown, Central market, etc.
You can get fabulous discounts now as the tourism industry is hit hard by SARS.

We stayed at Pan Pacific Hotel, KL last year which was very comfortable - the only drawback is it is slightly out of the way.
This year we have opted for The Istana which is luxurious and near to some big shopping malls, plus only 5 min taxi ride from Petronas Twin Towers. We had a meal there last year and it was lovely - from what we saw the hotel was extremely luxurious with friendly staff - if anyone else agreed - please let me know.

Linwein,
According to the KL map I just bought, the Sheraton is about 500 yards from Dan Wangi station on the Putra line. Is this not open yet? Also, can you tell me if the monorail has started up yet please? All the guides I've seen say it's due to open "shortly" but I can't find out when!
Thanks.

The Stn next to Sheraton which connects to Bkt Bintang and tourist areas is not open yet. The Putra line connecting outskirts is open but heads the other uninteresting direction. Apparently when they were testing the Bkt Bintang line, a wheel dropped from the track and fell on a pedestrian's head seriously injuring him. So it's more testing for now."shortly" may be indefinite. The BKt BIntang line was supposed to be ready in 1998! Which monorail are you refering to?

As another possible option, check out Renaissance Hotel - just down the road from Shangri La and a little closer to Petronas Towers. Big fairly non descript block but rooms are pretty good and pool is really massive for a city hotel especially. Also has tennis courts etc. We were there a few years ago and it was cheaper than Shangri La for I think similar quality.

Thanks for all the feedback. The 3 hotels I mentioned were our only options and we finally decided to go with our original thoughts and picked the Sheraton. Mostly because it was the only one offering a free upgrade to a suite and this may be our only chance ever to stay in a suite in a hotel of that quality!
Hopefully transport won't be TOO much of an issue and the walking will help to counteract all the hawker meals we're planning to enjoy!
