KL and Mallacca holiday--where to stay, things to do?

We finally decided on spending the new year in KL with a side trip to Mallacca. Someone told me I would be better off staying in Petaling Jaya for the KL part, and a side trip to Mallacca for a good countryside experience.

Can anyone help with activities and places to stay? We are a big group with children.

thanks!

I'd really stick with central KL. PJ could be anywhere. I'd recommend the Shangri La in KL

I certainly wouldn?t stay in PJ.

You will enjoy Malacca, but I would not describe it as a countryside experience ? if you want that, head for the old hill stations.

So no to PJ--and better to stay in central KL. Got that. We need many rooms so a hotel or a serviced apartment would be ideal.

How would we get to Malacca, and what would the experience be like? Come to think of it, my friend just said we would like an out of town trip to Malacca--I think I was the one who thought it was "countryside".

thanks walter and tangata.

Ok, I remember now, there are 17 of you! What courage!

In Kuala Lumpur, I can still only recommend Lanson Place from personal experience. However, several of our people stayed in the Mi Casa or the Su Casa, which are also apartment style hotels. You may like to check them out on http://www.malaysia.micasahotel.com/index.htm and http://www.kl-hotels.com/sucasa/. Our people were verb happy with their service.

The last time we were in Malacca, we stayed at the Hotel Puri, which is a converted Chinese Merchant?s home. It is rated as two stars, but perhaps deserves a little more than that and it has a great location in China Town. See http://www.asiahotels.com/hotelinfo/Puri_Hotel/. We enjoyed it.

As for getting to Malacca, I believe the only options would be bus or car. In your case, it might be worth while hiring two mini buses. It is a pleasant and not difficult drive. The hardest part is getting out of Kuala Lumpur; they have some great spaghetti junctions. Plot your route before you leave.

We found Malacca fascinating with Chinese, Dutch and English influences as well as Malay.

You'll have no problem finding a local tour rep to organise a day trip to Malacca for you. Organise it via the hotel concierge.

Ive already mentioned the science museum dedicated to oil and energy which I thought was great. It can be found in the mall beneath the twin towers - which is ideal for families - shops, cinema, arcades etc - very upscale.
