Khustaii Nuuru & Terelj National Parks

Please does anyone have any comments on how Khustaii Nuuru & Terelj National Parks compare with each other, especially in terms of scenery?

I went to Mongolia in July 2005. I am going back to Khustai Nuuru in 2009.

Terelj was more wooded with steeper hills, bigger rivers, and rock formations. I spent a day riding a horse through it and saw quite a few families with various herds. It is easy to get to from UB, mabye an hour to hour and a half. It's a little more picturesque than Khustaii Nuuru.

But Khustaii Nuuru has the takhis. They can be seen in the rolling steppes and along streams in the morning and at dusk. The hills are tree covered at the top. There are also lots of marmots in Khustaii Nuuru. You can ride horses at Khustaii Nuuru too. It is a little further to get, maybe 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Here is a link to my report, which contains a link to the photos.

Below is a link to 110 photos
1-20 are of The Great Wall
Any with the dun colored, black maned takhi horses or marmots are from (I spelled it) Hustai Nuuru. The 4th from the last picture is Terelj. Since I was on a horse most of the time at Terelj, I did not take that many photos.

I’d love to know what your overall Mongolia plan is!

Thanks for response and links.

Sadly the time in Mongolia will be short as it will just be part of a long trip. In fact shorter than first planned as it looks as though the train we were going to use from UB will not run and we'll have to leave a day earlier - hence the question.

Basically days as follows:

Arrive by train from Irkutsk, look at UB.

Day trip Terelj.

To Khustain (or Hustain) for overnight.

Back to UB.

Train on to Beijing.

A totally inadequate time for such a huge country but infinitely better than not going at all!

You are right, a few days is better than not going. If you will not be at Khustaii early in the morning or just before sunset, then I would not choose that location. Also summer months and especially early fall are best for seeing the horses.

I too had planned to take the train. It would have been from Beijing to Ulaan Baatar, but a few weeks before my departure the schedule changed by a whole day making the train trip impossible.

What is your whole trip?

We were in Mongolia three months ago, and visited Hustai as part of our trip. The drive between Hustai and Ulaanbaatar was more like five hours for us, as the "highway" was under contruction and therefore everyone was driving on little "do it yourself" dirt roads alongside. The going was rough and dusty!

Lynn is definitely correct, the time to be at Hustai is early morning or late afternoon. We had a really wonderful encounter with a group of about 12 takhis there one afternoon, and in fact it was one of the coolest wildlife viewing experiences we have ever had.

You can see the pictures from our Sept 2007 trip to Mongolia at www.pbase.com/cwillis/mongolia.

Good luck planning your trip!
