I'm thinking about going on an overland tour of Tibet and Nepal which includes Mt Everest basecamp that starts in Kathmandu. I would really like some feed back about how safe it currently is in Kathmandu as I know there has been great deal of unrest in the past. As far as I know, there is still a US State Department travel warning for Nepal. Also, if anyone reading this has done such a tour, could you please let me know the name of the tour operator. I would appreciate anything you can tell me.

Yes, there has been unrest in Kathmandu for years and years. Recently, the kind of unrest you might encounter would be a bandh (a transport "strike" where all roads are blocked). This is an inconvenience but not dangerous to the traveller. I was last in Kathmandu in Nov. 2008. If you are interested, you can read my trip report by clicking on my name and looking at my list of trip reports.
Ain't done no tour, but I was in Kathmandu in January.
It's perfectly, perfectly safe for you. However the bandh's can cause major disruption to your travel plans, I'm not pretending otherwise, but in terms of your physical safety - relax. Stay somewhere full of similar people so if there's any drama, you have a pal.

Search in here on Kathmandu bandh. We talked about it lots in January.
Kathmandu is a cool place to visit...as one of my best buddy resides there and the way he describes about that place sounds interesting...even i am planning for a visit...
I'm leaving Oct. 16 for my second visit to Nepal and I have not encountered any problems in the past I was even there when the maoists and government were fighting. Tourists are recognized as valuable income by all sides.
Nepal is very rarely a stable country, however there are not many risks there. Kathmandu is a brilliant city and there are so many tourists that you would have to be very unlucky to be caught up in anything. Besides, even when there is trouble it has nothing to do with tourists and they are left alone.
The biggest issue will be travel, there are often bus services strike due to the high cost of petrol. There can be raod blockages as well.
I would not worry at all if i was you ~ Go and enjoy!!.
