Hi bbraude,
I did a similar trip last year & have a recommendation to share with you -
I was thrilled with the service I received from Mr. Min Kc at Pigeon Travels (pigeontravel@gmail.com) which is based in the Thamel area of Kathmandu.
Hope this is helpful & happy trails!
used a company out of nepal. just wanted to add what an amazing trip that was .
I don’t have tour reccos, but do want to mention that the Friendship Bridge entry point between Tibet and Nepal was closed a few times in 2008, and also at other times the PRC was only letting traffic pass out of the PRC and was not letting visitors in. It may have been a combination of troubles in Nepal and also related to the Olympic year (visa issues were abounding in the PRC this year), but hard to say. It may be a slightly better idea to do this trip from Lhasa to Nepal just to avoid the potential hassle of the PRC closing the border (although the Nepalese could as well of course). You might want to check the LonelyPlanet website (see the Thorn Tree posts area) for up to date information on this, they always seem to have the latest.
I assume you know that you have to use two agencies actually, as the agency in one place will have to hand you over to an agent in the other, as you need a permit and to be on a tour to go overland into or out of Tibet (in addition to your PRC visa). But your agent in one should be able to hook up with a counterpart in the other country and work together.
