Kamala?
i'm wondering what people have thought about the Kamala beach...I'm considering this area in Phuket, as we want someplace on the beach in the $150 and under range. Would we still be able to get to the John Grey tours, etc?

John Gray will pick you up from just about anywhere. The picked us up from Khao Lak, no problem.
Layalina in Kamala has gotten some nice reviews and looks nice. Patong is only 5 km away if you like that scene.

Kamala is a reasonable choice, the Kamala Resort is right on the beach, though there is the narrow walkway just between the resort pool/gardens and the beach but this runs in front of other places along the beach anyway.
The beach area is now quite busy and the roads along and down to the main beach area have shops, restaurants and bars.
Out of the busy season it is quieter but Nov to March it is very busy. Solid rows of beach chairs and umbrellas along the main beach area.
If you want quiete and relaxing Surin / Bangtao might suit you better.
Tous go from all over.
I was in Kamala in January but didn't notice the place.
But places have started being opened well away from the beach area so location is important.
Patong is about 20 mins away over steep hills.
Rates depends on time of year you are going.

My friends and I used Kamala several times. But this was 10 to 15 years ago and before the Kamala Beach Hotel and others opened. Considering the fact that the beach isnt huge, it should be very crowded during high season.
I am wondering if the Kamala Beach Resort still exists. In former times this hotel (dont mix it up with Kamala Beach Hotel) and renting a private house were the only options. And there was no public transportation over the hill to Patong. You had to take the chicken bus to Phuket Town and there change for Patong. Maybe this has changed now.
If you go now almost every hotel in Kamala is under 150 bucks. Just check the Kamala website.
