Japan winter! 2-month itinerary

Jump to last reply

Hi everybody! I am planning a solo backpack trip to Japan in Jan-Feb and would like some inputs on the itinerary. I have been to Japan before but visited only major places (Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya), so this time I am looking to get to know the country better, both cultural sites and nice landscapes. I can speak Japanese so going to the country side will be a good training!

I will start by visiting the Tohoku region and finish in Kawaguchiko and Tokyo. I have roughly 3 weeks between Tohoku and Tokyo, and I am not sure where I should go - whether I should go all the way down and visit Chugoku and Kansai or keep it closer and visit Chubu and Kanto and, in either case, where should I start to optimize transportation. Would be happy if someone could comment on that! :)
Also, I thought of saving Hokkaido for another trip. I want to go there when my ski skills are a little better and when I have more money hehe

I intend to do most of the commute on common trains or buses, as I found they were kinda cheap when I went there last time. I am starting on January 12th and this is my schedule so far:

Day 1-4 Sendai
Day 5-6 Hiraizumi
Day 7-8 Morioka, Kakunodate
Day 9-10 Akita
Day 11-12 Ginzan Onsen, Yamadera
Day 13 Zao Onsen
Day 14-15 Fukushima
Day 16 Aizu Wakamatsu
Day 17-18 Niigata

Day 19-37 ???

Day 38-39 Kofu
Day 40-42 Kawaguchiko area
Day 43-50 Tokyo

Thanks in advance for the help! :)))
