Japan Rail Pass? Or Seperate Tickets?
I am wondering what is better in my situation...
We will be taking the train from Narita airport to Kyoto, using the Nozomi. Then will be returning a few days later Kyoto to Tokyo, then using transportation around Tokyo, and finally returning to Narita.
Does it make any sense to buy a JR pass, when the Nozomi is the way we would be travling Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo?

The Nozomi is not eligible for the JR Pass. It is a very expensive way to go. I used my JR Pass and took the Hikari shinkansen from Shin-Yokohama (10 min. from Tokyo) to Kyoto and was there in 2 hours. I thought the JR Pass was WELL worth the money considering I could use it for Shinkansen along with any other JR rail line in each city. In my opinion, I would get the rail pass and take either the Kodama or the Hikari. Is there a reason why you are partial to the Nozomi line?

The rail pass is well worth it and Kodama and Hitari lines are just fine. I think you only save 20 minutes by taking the Nozomi line and it's not worth it. The trip itself is nice -- I even got great views of Mt. Fuji both times-- so the 2 hours passes very quickly.

JR Pass is for 7-days - what if you're only there for 4 days? Would you guys still recommend the pass over buying separate tickets? We're undecided between only seeing the immediate Tokyo area or venturing out to Kyoto - do we have enough time?

Bonjour Tab,
The 7-days pass is worth it if you decide to visit Kyoto, since it costs less than the Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo fare and covers side trips you may take as well as the free rides on JR transportation inside Tokyo.
On the other hand, should you decide to stay in Tokyo, you'll be better off without it.

TAB,
Point to point vs pass comparison is not difficult for the Japan Rail since their fare structure is very simple.
http://www.hyperdia.com shows how much the tickets cost:
Tokyo-Kyoto-Tokyo Hiraki, ordinary car
13420 *2 = 26840 yen
Narita-Tokyo-Narita Narita express, ordinary car
3140 * 2 = 6280 yen
Total = 33,120 yen
While 7 day JR pass ordinary car is
28,300 yen.
