I am planning a trip to Japan next August with my 18 year old son (mom with son). We will have about 11 days in country. I was looking at flying into Tokyo and out of Osaka. I know this is very general but I am looking for some itinerary help. Not sure what to see. My son has never been to Japan and I have only been to Kyushu. Although we both like looking at scenery, I am not much of a hiker. I was thinking about shrines, museums, buddhas, Mt. Fuji (not hiking it though), or anything else of interest. Any specific suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

For an excellent source of information on travel in Japan, see:

Michelin Green Guides are excellent on what there is to see. There is one for Japan.
I was in Japan in 1979, and saw mainly Kyoto, Nara and spent one day in Osaka. In 1981 I got a train pass for a week or ten days and traveled in central Japan, starting in Tokyo going to Takayama, Kanazawa, Matsumoto and back to Tokyo. I also did a day trip to Nikko. You will not be able to cover much more in 11 days.

Highlights for me were Kyoto, Koyasan and Takayama. In kyoto alone there are something like 18 UNESCO World Heritage sites so I would be inclined to spend at least 4 days there, possibly longer. Himeji castle also make afor a good side trip from Kyoto.
For getting around teh country check out the Japan Rail pass which has to be purchased from outside the country
