Japan in September

Anyone been to Japan in September? We're toying with the idea of using some UA miles before the devaluation and going to Japan. I've looked at weather data including http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2273.html and have read that it could still be hot & humid as well as potential typhoons. However, my experience traveling these last years is that averages tend to have fallen by the wayside and we are forever hearing, "This is such unusual weather..." So I would love to hear from anyone who has been there during September & what they experiencesd weather-wise. While saving the miles has appeal, I don't want to go somewhere with awfully hot & humid weather. Thanks!

I visited Japan during the first three and a half weeks in September, 2014. I spent two and a half weeks on Kyushu, and the last week on the San'in Coast. I found the weather to be typical Japan--hot and humid, with annoying rain. However, I just kept on going.

On an earlier trip, we visited Kyoto during July, and the humidity there was just awful. Kyoto is a known sweat basin, so I would put that at the end of your trip, when it would perhaps start to cool down.

After that miserable experience in Kyoto, I have learned to take precautions. I carry a water bottle at all times, and I ask ladies at various restaurants to fill it up for me. Tap water is safe in Japan. Then I take an umbrella that I use for rains and shade, and a little hat that I wear when there are too many crowds to use an umbrella.

Japan is wonderful. Every country has pluses and minuses, and I would say that Japan has wonderful nature, people, and food, but lousy weather. Go for it.

Can't speak about the weather in September, but having returned from my first trip to Japan last month, I would visit Japan in any month. Kyoto was hot with a few humid days and even Matsumoto was extremely hot for that time of year. But despite the temperatures I enjoyed my time there immensely and can't wait to return. If you enjoy wearing hats like I do (and most Japanese) they are a must. I would go for it Dona. It's a fascinating country.

I don't know how flexible your schedule is, but if you can push your trip to November, you may see the koyo (fall colors) as well as having cooler temps. Even October will have cooler temps, but no koyo.

We were in Kyoto at the beginning of October one year. It was hot (DC summer hot) and humid. I think it rain at least one of the days we were there. Last time we went was later in October and the weather was perfect. I think you just make it work with the timeframe you have to work with.

August is always very hot and September, particularly early also tends to be hot and humid. Best weather tends to be after mid October through November. Typhoon season also ends around mid October.

Thanks, all! I think we will move the trip a bit. While it would be nice to book flights under the old UA mileage requirements, would like to avoid DC summer hot-ugh!

jdc - are you going to do a TR?

I'm confused. I thought that the United program changes take place on November 1, 2017, and as long as you book your flights before that date, you can use the old award chart. Are you talking about 2017 or 2018?

I personally prefer the long days in September versus later in the year, and the heat and humidity did not bother me too much, except in Kyoto. Also, September is a great time to travel in Japan because the Europeans travel in August, and it's right before the leaves change, so there are not too many other tourists. Well, it's your decision.

ClaiforniaLady, you are correct. New rules go into effect Nov 1, 2017. I was looking at the latest I could book a trip for under the current rules and that would be Sept 2018.

On our first trip we travelled Kate September into October and the weather was lovely. I hate hot and humid with a passion and didn't feel either. The best year we went end October into November, also very nice though last part of that was in Kyushu further south. This time we went in late March into late April so not relevant...
