Japan camping (forgot to add tag)

So I've decided to hire a camper van and drive around Japan for 2 or 3 weeks, we will fly into Tokyo, spend couple of nights there and then pick up the camper.

My question is if there is any where people would recommend going that is more possible and worth it with having the freedom of a vehicle.

Initial thought was to drive from Tokyo to West coast and head down there to hiroshima visiting places on way and then back up East coast to Tokyo, visiting places on the way. The large cities I would plan on parking at a train station and get the train into the city instead of driving through the hellish traffic if this is at all possible.

Thoughts on this and ideas are most welcome.
