We may have an extra day and a half during our stay in the Tokyo area. Since we have a Japan Rail Pass, we were wondering if a train ride through the mountains via Tokyo - Nagoya - Takayama - Toyama - Matsumoto - Tokyo could be done in that time, and would it be worthwhile if we were not able to stop along the way. Is there a better train route?
We are already planning the Hakone, Nikko, and Kamakura side trips while we are in the Tokyo area. In addition we will have previously spent five days in the Kyoto area before getting to Tokyo.
If a ride through the Alps didn't make sense does anyone have another suggestion for the Tokyo area?
