Itinerary ideas for Singapore in Oct 2005.

My husband and I are taking our "trip of a lifetime" in Sept-Oct 2005. We will be in Singapore in Oct 2005 for 3 days, 4 nights. Any suggestions and hotels and sights to see? Is public transportation readily available? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks.

There are hotels here of every style and for every level of cost. There are many different activities, restaurants and ways to experience the rich variety of cultures that flourish here. You need to provide some idea of your budget and interests in order to get some targeted response.
Public transportation is abundant in Singapore. I normally recommend that visitors take taxis because they are extremely cheap and it's more time efficient. You also will see more than when traveling by MRT (train) which is mostly underground.
You will find people on this board who think Singapore is "sterile, boring, etc." You should come and make up your own mind. While it is definitely not as smelly, crowded and full of touts as many other Asian capitals, I think it's equally rich in great food, and interesting things to do. you just need to know where to look.
(BTW, I'm not knocking other Asian capitals...I love BKK, Hanoi, Beijing, Hong Kong, etc. I just love Singapore too!)

Get yourself a good Singapore guidebook. The Singapore Tourist Board publishes some nice info, and they will supply you with a book and maps for free. You can find them on the web. Also, you can search this board for information on SIngapore. many of us have been to Singapore, and there are lots of questions and answers about what to see and do there. Once you have some specific questions, it'll be easier for us to help.

Check out http://www.visitsingapore.com/ for a start. It's by the Singapore Tourism Board and has excellent info to start you off.

Hi,
I just returned from a 5-day stay in Singapore.

There is plenty to see in Singapore, but I have hand-picked what I consider to be the "must-dos":

-Raffles Hotel (must visit LongBar for the famous Singapore Sling, great music and where it's the only place in Singapore you can litter i.e. with peanut shells).

- Orchard Road: for shopping
- Night Safari@the Zoo
- Lau Pa Sat (to sample local cuisines)
- Statues: Merlion (symbol of Singapore/ Sir Stamford Raffles (founder of Singapore/ Supreme court (architecture and view of sky scrapers)
-Clark Quay (Dinner by the Singapore River and/or sample satay@Satay Club)
-Singapore River cruises: available at the pier at Boat Quay and Raffles'landing site near Parliament House. Available 0900-2300.

-Sentosa: small island with beaches and historical museums

If time permits:
- Chinatown
- Little India

Visit the website as suggested by JannaG for further details on the above mentioned places.

For places to eat (afterall, Singapore is the food paradize), do try the following:

StraitsCafe@Grand Hyatt Hotel: It's the one-stop for local cuisine served buffet style. Highly recommended for the tourist who wishes to sample all the local food.

LongBeach Seafood Restaurant@EastCoast Parkway for famous singapore chilli crab and/or pepper crab. Also recommended: Drunken prawns i.e. live prawns soaked in Cognac just before boiling in soup. Delicious.

This should be a good starting point. Transportation is very cheap by taxi or by subway "MRT".

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

Good luck!

Having just returned from 6 days in SIN (my 5th trip there) I can wholeheartedly recommend these "mustsquot;

Night Safari
Bird Park
Singapore Zoo
Boat Quay
Clarke Quay (if the shops reopen by the time you are there)
Little India

and

a day tour to Kukup is a good way to see a little Malaysia if you have time or get bored.

We loved our very recent 3 days in Singapore-a pleasant surprise to us after several years absence. Already planning to return in October for a longer stay. I previously complained of Singapore's "sterility" but after 3 weeks in India it was a welcome change!

Don't miss lunch or dinner at No Signboard Seafood at 414 Geylang Road. All the taxi drivers should know it! The crab is really messy to eat but the prawns in chilli sauce and also a white pepper sauce were brilliant. We also loved the Orchard Hotel. We upgraded (S$70++) to a Club floor room and enjoyed their free wine & pre-dinner nibblies from 6-8 pm, plus breakfast & laundry and free soft drinks daily. It is a very good hotel for the money. Priceline normally has it as a "4 star Orchard Road" for around 45-55 USD per night. We used the MTR train and caught several cheap taxis and buses and could not fault any of these modes of transport. Bought some cheap classy spectacle frames from C.C. Chiu 4th floor, Orchard Towers 400 Orchard Road, around 50% cheaper than my current frames. Shopping (24 hrs) at Mustafa Centre in Little India is a great idea. Cheap prices for mp3, cameras, souvenirs, pharmaceuticals etc. Have lots of fun!

While I very much enjoyed my meal at this branch of No Signboard, I also ate at No Signboard on the Esplanade last time I was in town (March '05)....I found the pepper crab was just as good, the prawns were fantastic!!!, but the atmosphere was much nicer at the Esplanade....

I liked the outdoor seating with a view of the Merlion and the water much better than the atmosphere at Geylang. To each their own, just take a look at the other one if you have a chance...
Best wishes for a great trip! Dave

Too bad that clarke quay is closed for renovation. It left me with very fond memory of singapore. What about robertson quay? Haven't been there before but if there is nothing too special or memorable, perhaps I should just skip that area.

For the local food, go for katong Laksa.. Taxi driver shld know the way.. To get a feel of the local life, visit the heartland for cheaer shopping alternatives! E.g. Toa Payoh. u can easily get to places in SIngapore thru Mrt ( underground subway). for electronics goods, proceed to SIm Lim Square near Bugis Mrt. U can shop at Bugis Village, just ask ard for direction near the MRT station. it is actually a open air night market. it has been extended to nearby shophouses with air-con as well.
