It is crunch time BKK hotel
Hi
I have posted on and off on this site asking for assistance in respect of accommodation and activities for my 22 year old daughter (it is her birthday present and a surprise). She is in Bangkok for 4 nights in mid June after her university exchange in the US, returning to Australia via Europe and BKK.
I have almost decided on Siam@Siam hotel but then it occured to me that while the hotel may be hip and funky we already stayed in a similar type of hotel in Singapore called the Gallery. Also it seems located a away from streets where she may walk around and get the flavour of Bangkok, including eateries, particularly in the evening.
I think Carol mentioned Adelphi Suites as a possibility.
One thought I had was to give her 2 or three nights in a city hotel and one night in the river hotel. Any suggestions roughly in the price range of Siam@Siam?
She will be doing a bicycle tour for half a day and will spend the rest of the time wandering around Bangkok independently.
I wonder if it would be nice for her to do the fishing village tour with Tong(so??) or it would be overdoing it.
I think I bought into 'analysis paralysis' this time around so help!!!

Here's my take on it. I looked up the hotel and it's across the street from a Skytrain station, so she can get places easily.
Bangkok is not particularly a walking city (I do walk in Bangkok, but many do not). I'm not sure what you consider to be "streets where she may walk around and get the flavour of Bangkok." The skytrain will take her to many eateries in the evening as well as to shopping venues.
Personally, I'm a river person. Note that the river hotels are also in the city. It's a matter of where in the city you want to be located. I like being next to the river and taking the water taxis to many of the major wats. But I'd say choose one location, don't have her waste time moving hotels with just 4 days in Bangkok.
Bangkok is a wonderful city to explore independently. I wouldn't schedule too much for her. Going with Tong to the fishing village (if Tong were available at this late date) would take up another day. You've already schedule a bicycle trip for her, no need for other activities. I'm sure she'll find ways to occupy her time... sightseeing, shopping, spa - way too much to do in three and a half days!
So I'd say stop the paralysis and book what you've already decided.

Dream Hotel, Sukhumvit. [where I've stayed 3 times - great blue lights]
www.dreambkk.com
S15, Sukhumvit. [where I'm staying right now.]
www.S15hotel.com
[yup, these two places are on the same street - Soi 15]
Shanghai Inn - Chinatown - [where I've stayed 5 times]- you'll both sure know you're in BKK if you stay there...
www.shanghai-inn.com
All recommended.
or Siam @Siam is fine too. [where I've stayed once]Same Same. But you're correct, it's not in an interesting part of town. The others mentioned all have street life right outside the door [ and street-life in BKK can mean MANY things]
But, if you're anything like me, you'll get more confused, the more you look. Just bite the bullet, as Kathie said. Deal direct with the hotels - you'll save nuttin' going thru an agency.
If you wanna stay Riverside in style you'll be way over your budget. You really only need to spend $100 a nite [ish] to get a great designer hotel. Pay a little bit extra and get a suite. Worth it.

I bow to Scotters wisdom there. She's [he's] quite correct. Club floor is quite fun at Siam @ Siam. My only complaint there is the in-room design [Club Floor]. Mine had a wall-size mural that looked like someone had combined an acid trip and projectile gold vomit.
But.. each to his/her own.

Thanks all. This information will be useful for when my husband and I next travel.
BTW I noticed that JW Marriott Resort has a special on 4 nights pay for three at 4700THB per night room only - Is that a good rate for the place and the type of hotel?

What time of year is it for? If this is a net rate (includes tax and service totaling 17%) it's a very good rate if you pay for three nights at 4700 baht and get the 4th night free. It works out to about $113 per night.

If I can insert my 2 cents ... Siam@Siam is located very close by the National Stadium skytrain station but is not in an "interesting" neighborhood for walking around IMO.
If your daughter stays around Sukhumvit soi 11, soi 8, she will be able to walk right outside the door and find food, fun, and friendly people. At Siam she will have to get on the skytrain. The skytrain closes down at either midnight or 1am??? Someone here will be able to say what the hours of operation are, I'm sure.
Why not look at the Grand Sukhumvit Sofitel??? I just stayed there a few weeks ago (said I would probably not stay there again because I prefer the Adelphi Suites) and it is a very LOVELY hotel. Your daughter would need only to walk down soi 6 to get to Sukhumvit area. Not a long walk at all. Soi 11 (with Cheap Charlies and my friend's pub, the Pickled Liver) is very close by.
Just my 2 cents... thanks for letting me cut in here.
(I still like Adelphi Suites!!)
