One of the regulars on this site, Mohammed, lives in Colombo and I expect will answer your question.

We were in Sri Lanka in November - had a really wonderful trip. We opted not to go into Columbo, which has been more disrupted by the activities of the Tamil Tigers than the rest of the country under control of the Sri Lankan government. We visited Dambulla and the surrounding area, Kandy, and the tea country.

I actually think you are better off in the countryside than in Colombo. Given the bus bombings, I would not ride public buses.

I'm also wondering about whether or not to go to Sri Lanka. My trip is still a long way off (Sept. 09), and I know it's hard to predict the level of safety this far in advance.

On the other hand, I am moderately anxious about most of my trips before I leave, then when I get back, I wonder why I wasted so much energy worrying.

Sorry I only saw this post today.

We have just been through a very busy SAARC summit conference which had very heightened security in Colombo city, but things are back to normal once again. Daily life goes on pretty much normally, there are the usual polioce and military check points around the city but this is much of a bother really. Out of Colombo things are a whole lot easier with check points few and far between. I am infact going to the East Coast to Trincomalee next week with the family. The horrific incidents of terrorism that are highlighted in the international press are very true but they are also isolated incidents and statistically speaking Colombo and Sri Lanka is probably one of the safest locations for a foreign tourist to visit.
