For weather, go to weatherbase.com

For airlines between Shanghai and Hong Kong, try Dragon Air, Cathay Pacific, China Eastern Airlines, and Shanghai Airlines. Also see if you can get the flight from Hong Kong to Shanghai included in your international flight. This may be easily and cheaply included. Also consider flying into Shenzhen (on China Eastern Airlines, China Southern Airlines, or Shanghai Airlines) or Macau (on Air Macau or Shanghai Airlines), this is often cheaper then flying into Hong Kong airport. You can take a ferry from Macau or ferry or bus/train from Shenzhen into Hong Kong, or spend a night in Macau for a little Portuguese change. From Shenzhen honestly it is a pain so IMO it would have to be significantly cheaper and you have to figure in the transport cost between the two.

The first week in October in a major public holiday week in China, so you are missing that and the more expensive airfare. There are a lot of trade shows in the fall in both Hong Kong and Shanghai, so that probably affects airfare. I don’t know when the best time is to book flights. It’s all a crap shoot sometimes IMO.

For shopping, hmm, you are going to two places where you can have shoes made, handbags made, suits made, hand-painted china made, can buy good quality textiles like silk and cashmere at good prices, can buy jewelry (at least in Hong Kong) at good prices, can buy real watches at very good prices without tax, can buy antique maps and prints and travel posters, can buy excellent antique and reproduction furniture and bric a brac at very good prices, can buy artwork at good prices, can buy all types of clothing shoes and bags made by young designers just starting out, and can buy any of a myriad of local handicrafts from chops to porcelains to cheongsoms to silk lamp shades, and you want to come all the way to China to buy ---- a fake Prada bag....I just don’t get the lack of imagination.

During this spring - till around mid-May 2007 - the lowest fare from mid-America to Shanghai is on AA. They started their ORD-PVG last year, and fares during off-season was competitive. Say around $900 roundtrip for the lowest discount fare - either through AA.com or an agent.

My feeling is that late October may be similar.

There is no question to me that the best time to visit Shanghai as a tourist from a weather view point is late October. Daytime average highs are in the seventies and night time fifties. For details see <weatherbase.com>
There are 3 US airlines that fly to Shanghai -- United, American and NW. These days, fares can flutuate widely day to day. There is no one airline that consistantly has lower fares. I have used <www.gochina.travelsuperlink.com> for references to see what people have been paying on airfares to China. This website has a lot of useful information.

Prices for Shanghai to Hong Kong rt ticket:

On Cathay Pacific or Dragonair approx HK$2800-3300 throughout the year. Most preferred.

China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines offers more discount pricing, and prices varies greatly depending on the flight, date, and when you purchase your ticket. Prices can range from HK$900-3000.

Shanghai Airlines may be cheap but be warned it's a small airline and delays are frequent. Less preferred.

Add about HK$400-500 to the ticket for tax & surcharge. US$1 = HK$7.8 approx

It is a pretty big hassle to get to Hong Kong from Shenzhen airport and the savings aren't that great so it depends if you are willing to spend the time and effort.
