Kim and Martin from England are getting married and staying at Beruwela in Sri Lanka next April (2000) for two weeks before honeymooning at Kuramathi in the Maldives for a week. Does any one have any holiday tips to share with us? Would anyone recommend hiring a car including a driver in Sri Lanka in order to get around and see the sights? If so what are the daily costs and is it cheaper than going on organised trips. Any body travelled on the seaplanes from Male Airport to their Island in the Maldives? Did you experience Sand fly bites on the Maldives? We would welcome any suggestions/tips/advice/do’s & don’ts/ that you think may assist us and would care to share with us on our wedding/honeymoon/holiday of a lifetime. Look forward to hearing from you.

Hi Kim & Martin:
Unless you are prepared to fight with millions of people and battle the pollution, I would definitely suggest a car and driver.
My husband and I did it in 1997. You decide where you want to go, take it to a travel agent in Beruwela and get them to make the arrangements. You usually get the old British Ambassador (very comfortable) and an English speaking driver/tour guide. You are also free to stop where you want and most of them know where the deals are for silks, etc
Re: sand flea bites. Try Johnson's baby oil on the tops of your feet upto your knees - works for us every time!
Good luck - have a wonderful life!
I dito the comments by Rosalinda. I was there a couple of years ago. It took six hours to travel 50 miles as the roads wind back and forth. What a blast though. It remains one of my favorite strange places.
